Purrfectly fantastic new paranormal series!

Jacqueline M. Battisti's new urban fantasy/paranormal debut, The Guardian of Bastet, had me from the very first word in the blurb. Her main character is a cat-shifter. Not a jaguar or a puma, oh no. At the full-moon, Trinity Morrigan-Caine shifts into a house-cat. The book might as well have jumped up and said "Here reader, reader, reader..."

The story made me purr with delight.

Trinity Morrigan-Caine is a half-breed. Her mother is a powerful witch of the Morrigan line. (Yes, that Morrigan. Morgaine. You know the one. She had a little something to do with a fellow named Arthur. Way, way back.) But Trinity isn't a powerful witch like her mom. Because Olivia Morrigan went and fell in love with a werepuma, and that just isn't done. So Olivia Morrigan got disowned and disavowed, and went to live with her husband, Ben Caine, in the Genesee Valley of upstate New York.

Which turned out to be kind of like Sunnydale in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Complete with demons and Hellmouth. Olivia Morrigan found herself the head witch of the Genesee Valley Society of Others (GVSO) because witches are just so much better than everyone else.

The only problem is that Olivia and Ben's daughter, Trinity, isn't quite what Olivia had in mind. Trinity isn't much of a witch, and she doesn't shift into anything fierce. Dad's an alpha werepuma. When it's Trinity's time of the month, Trinity turns into good old Felis catus, otherwise known as an ordinary house cat. She even (ugh!) hunts mice. Very well according to her cousin and housemate.

Tracy's other power? Well, since she turns into an animal, she can also understand them. Which makes her a fantastic vet. Her patients just adore her. And she does work miracles with the animals.

The other problem with being a were-kitty is that Trinity has all the morals of, well, a cat. She likes men. Frequently and often. And isn't horribly particular. Which comes to bite her, and pretty much everyone around her, in the butt when Trinity brings a demon home on the worst booty call ever.

But at least Trinity didn't summon the demon. She just didn't pay attention when he started mesmerizing her. There's a hotter place in hell for the ones who summoned him. Figuring that out and growing up and into her powers enough to take that bad boy out, is what makes this story sing.

This is Trinity's story. She starts out as a damn good veterinarian, but a dud in everything else. Only one person believes in her, and unfortunately for Trinity, it isn't one or both of her parents. (Dad did better than mom, but still...) The only one to believe in Trinity was the GVSO's one and only resident vampire, Vincent. His last act is to gift Trinity with an ancient amulet, a powerful talisman that he has been keeping for centuries, waiting for the one person capable of meeting its potential.

That person is Trinity, the forbidden child of a witch and a shifter. Only she can be the true Guardian of Bastet. But only if she can accept herself and her own powers, powers that everyone has told her she does not have. She's always believed she's just a dud.

But only a true Guardian can send the demon back to the nether-realm he came from. And to do that, Trinity will have to accept that she is powerful and capable, and worthy of being the true avatar of Bastet.

Bastet was a warrior-goddess, the woman with the head of a lion. Her Guardian must also embrace the warrior within.

Trinity will need to be a warrior, and a shifter, and a witch. And powerful in all ways. Because that warrior within her will need to fight against a traitor who is way too close.

Escape Rating A-: The mother/daughter dynamics (and grandmother/mother/daughter dynamics) remind me a bit of Brave, and that's a good reminder. A lot of what drives this story is the mother/daughter issue. Not just that Olivia makes no secret of her disappointment in Trinity, but also Gwendolyn Morrigan's rejection of her daughter Olivia for marrying a shifter. And most of all, Trinity's cousin Lily, and her feelings of rejection by her witch mother for also being an under-powered half-breed.

Trinity comes off as a bit self-absorbed at the beginning of the story (her mental dialog about turning into a cat once a month and playing with her cat-familiar as a cat is hilarious), but she definitely has reasons for where she starts out. And she certainly redeems herself.

Probably my favorite new paranormal series!

This book was so much fun to read. I'm a paranormal fan, and I'll admit that sometimes books tend to run together in my mind. But I don't have to worry about that with this new series.

The main character Trinity is a below average shape-shifter. Her dad morphs into big cat, while she spends her monthly transformation chasing mice along side her house cat. Her aloof and somewhat cold mother comes from a long line of powerful witches, yet Trinity can cast a decent spell to save her life. All that changes when a demon starts killing off other supernatural beings in her community and Trinity is called to action.

I loved every bit of this novel. From the quirky, fallible characters to the "oops" date Trinity has with a strange man, it's one compelling read. The Guardian of Bastet is chock-full of mythology, a decent dose of mystery and suspense and sets up future books very nicely. I keep thinking about this book, so I mean it when I say that I really hope the next one comes sooner rather than later!

5 Wolfishly Delicious PAWS!

This is an excellent new book! It's fun, mysterious, full of fun supernatural beings, as well as a totally crazy plot twist that I was totally NOT expecting. How damn if it's not amazing! Plus, must I keep telling you about the HAWT werewolf, before you pick it up and read it yourself :)

Trinity is my total heroine. She's a vet- hello she has my career and love of animals- except that she's a kitty shifter- and I'm NOT! *sigh* LOL I think her description of her turning into a house cat monthly is hilarious. I mean, she calls herself a mad mouser LOL I still giggle when I watch each of my cats groom themselves. HAHA You don't wanna know what they look at me like while I do this. So, between work, and being a house kitty sometimes, she's also got a serious issue... Her supernatural friends are being killed off one by one, and though she would rather stay at home and hide, she somehow gets wrangled into the exact middle. I LOVE her character. She started out so normal without the whole crazy awesome kick ass chick. She literally grew into that when it was needed. Plus, I relate to her so much with her career being in that same career. However, I don't seem to have her crazy love life :)

I loved all of the side characters. Her parents, which made me grind my teeth, to her crazy grandma, to the HAWT werewolf, to the scary demon, to her sweet cousin, and all the other supernaturals. I cannot believe I'm about to say this... But my favorite-after said werewolf- would be the Vamper.... *GASP* I just said that out loud. I am liking a vamper. LOL I am seriously hoping that even though this was written like a stand alone, I am BEGGING and PRAYING that the author will take it upon my behalf and GIVE ME MORE!!! Like I will take anything! I loved this book!

The plot twist with the bad guys, seriously, I am still open mouthed. I don't know what to say. I totally didn't see that one coming. And then, the mythology tie in with the demons and the legend surrounding everything. I am seriously intrigued with how this came about. I really really liked the writing style. I need to say this one more time. Please gimme more of this book in some way. :) 5 WONDERFULLY SURPRISING AWESOME PAWS!!

Several real-data examples are given to illustrate the techniques discussed. The modeling accounts for target maneuvers, detection probability, false alarms, interference from other targets and the finite resolution capability of sensors. The problems of track initiation, track maintenance and track-to-track association and fusion in a multisensor situation are considered. The optimization of certain signal processing parameters based on tracking performance is also discussed. Many of these techniques have applications to state estimation when using multiple sensors in control systems, autonomous vehicle navigation and robotics. This text is written in textgraph TM format --- a self-contained concise text also suitable for use as viewgraphs. An extensive index is provided with all the indexed terms highlighted in the text for the convenience of the reader.

The skinny on the Bar-Shalom and Li's book

This comprehensive book begins by covering the different types of filters in use, and then starts covering the issues related to adjusting the parameters involved for certain uses. e.g. the markov coefficients in the Interacting Multiple Model filter with coordinated turns etc. The book then braches off to consider multitarget problems or problems in which targets split, or multisensor problems with heterogeneous sensors etc.
Realistic examples are given, and the printed format of this book is ideal not only for presentations, but also for easy reading. The style is `chatty' with a couple of funny quipps thrown in, but very to the point and un-pretentious. As is pointed out in the preample, the authors go to great lengths to use the minimum amount of math necessary for derivations etc. without sacrificing understanding. However, there aren't too many derivations, although happily, there is still a fair bit of math involved eg. in estimating the number of false alarms in an environment involving clutter etc. Basically this book addresses almost all the known methods/techniques in the field and presents them in a very clear and concise manner. Great value for money (and this is coming from someone who bought this while being paid a salary in Canadian $$).

If you've read any of Richard Feynman's wonderful autobiographies you may think that a biography of Feynman would be a waste of your time. Wrong! Gleick's Genius is a masterpiece of scientific biography--and an inspiration to anyone in pursuit of their own fulfillment as a person of genius. Deservedly nominated for a National Book Award, underservedly passed over by the committee in the face of tough competition, and very deservedly a book that you must read.

It would be hard to tell personal stories about the late Nobelist Feynman (1918-1988) better than the subject himself did in What Do You Care What Other People Think? To his credit, Gleick does not try. Rather, he depicts Feynman's "curious character" in its real context: the science he helped develop during physics' most revolutionary era. Fans of Feynman's own bestseller, "Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman! , " won't be disappointed by his colleagues' recollections of his reckless obsession with doing science (a grad-school dorm neighbor once opened Feynman's door to find him rolling on the floor as he worked on a problem); but the anecdotes punctuate an expanded account of Feynman the visceral working scientist, not Feynman the iconoclast. This biography wants to measure both the particle and the wave of 20th-century genius--Feynman's, Julian Schwinger's, Murray Gell-Mann's, and others'--in the quantum era. Gleick seems to have enjoyed the cooperation of Feynman's family plus that of a good many of his colleagues from the Manhattan Project and the Challenger inquiry (in which Feynman played a scene-stealing role), and he steadily levies just enough of the burden of Feynman's genius on the reader so that the physicist remains, in the end, a person and not an icon of science. When Nobel laureate Feynman died in 1988, the world lost one of the most creative, idiosyncratic, and important minds of the 20th century. From "Feynman Diagrams" to the Manhattan Project to the Challenger investigation, Feynman left his mark on everything and every life that he touched. Gleick, author of Chaos ( LJ 8/87), does a masterful job of capturing Feynman as both a scientist and as a mind at work: No better primer on Feynman's accomplishments will be written. Gleick is clear without condescension, accurate without being fussy, and thorough without being pedantic. As regards the personal minutiae of Feynman's life, this book is somewhat less comprehensive: Feynman's checkered history of personal relationships, for example, is not treated in the same exhaustive manner as his professional relationships. Feynman's personality, though, comes through in every word of this marvelous book. Although, astonishingly, Gleick never even met Feynman, he has written one of the most touching, affecting, and important works of scientific biography to have been produced in the last 30 years, a fine book that deserves a place in every collection. A Rare Biography

There are a couple of biographies that ascend beyond the level of our expectations, William Manchester's two-volume biography of Churchill is one, and "Genius" is another. Dick Feynman makes a biographer's work easier, the depth of his character, genius, and humor are limitless. Physicist Richard Feynman was also an accomplished safecracker, the inventor of QED (quantum electrodynamics), and whatever he turned his hand to, be it bongo drums or painting, the results were invariably immortalized in museums or symphony orchestras. Feynman famously dipped an O-Ring into ice water to demonstrate the cause of the Challenger disaster, and estimated the kilotonnage yielded at the Trinity test by observing the displacement of a handful of shredded paper.

Feynman was no slouch as a writer himself, penning "Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman", "Adventures of a Curious Character", and "The Pleasure of Finding Things Out." James Gleick has written a number of books, beginning with "Chaos" a good introduction to the science, and he has progressed as a writer to works like "Faster", "What Just Happened", and "Isaac Newton." A finalist for the National Book Award, "Genius" is Gleick's finest work and undeservedly missed out.

A more sober look at Feynman

Many accounts of Feynman read as a sequence of gee-whiz feats of dazzling theatricality. Gleick's take on him is more measured. The author nevertheless manages to capture the irreverent spirit and ebullient persona of this larger-than-life physicist while using everyday language to describe the latter's brilliant contributions to quantum electrodynamics (QED).

Throughout the book, Gleick gives us many instances that showcase Feynman's lifelong refusal to abide by what he considered pointless or hypocritical social norms. He carried over this unorthodoxy to his work, often coming up with approaches often considered bizzarre by his peers, to deal with the conundrums of QED.

In deft language and simple analogies, Gleick outlines the developments of quantum mechanics until Feynman's time. The author them goes on to describe the renormalization approach of Feynman, Schwinger and Tomonaga that offered an ingenious method of removing the puzzling self-interaction terms that would otherwise lead to infinite (unphysical) field quantities.

In chronicling Feynman's life, Gleick gives us vivid vignettes of the physicist's encounters with the other luminaries in his field, his refusal to accept anything unquestioningly, the sheer energy, originality and versatality with which he approached every aspect of his life and his often messy and volatile relationships with women. Paying tribute to Feynman's genius while portraying the many aspects of this brilliant persona is a daunting task; Gleick has risen to the monumental challenge with grace and profound insight.

This red book is my Good Book (paperback versio is red)

This is the only book I will ever give 5 stars, because reading it is a spiritual experience. It came from my old supervisor's library collection and later I purchased my own copy.

Gleick's conception of physics is quite accurate, and his writing style is sufficiently colourful, that this is one of the few books I always go back for passages. His writing of Feymann, his colleagues, and certain events are almost like reading a novel, adding charm to the otherwise blend perception to the world of science.

More importantly, it is Gleick's portrayal of Feymann as human -- with flaws, feelings, friends and enemies -- than a mystical figure, that makes it wonderful to read as a biography. He made no attempt to glorify his achievements, nor did he praise his talents. This, I find, a very humble gesture.

In fact, this is such an impact to me, when I finished reading this book, I decided to quit work and persue my Ph.D., which I am doing now.

Both books have helpful time lines and informative full-color and black-and-white captioned artwork. For both men, the personal risks were enormous; however, they were motivated not by altruism but by national, economic, and personal gain. La Salle was looking for adventure and to add to France's land in America. Readers come away amazed at his perseverance in obtaining financial backing for his journeys. This is a fine selection to place alongside Joan Elizabeth Goodman's Despite All Obstacles (Mikaya, 2001). Meltzer gives a full picture of his subject's accomplishments, the hardships suffered by him and his men, and their inhumane treatment of natives. This book is more thorough than Jim Gallagher's Ferdinand Magellan and the First Voyage around the World (Chelsea, 2000).

Lewis and Clark discusses the 1804 expedition that set out to explore the American continent. Apart from chapters introducing Meriwether Lewis, William Clark, and Sacagawea, the straightforward narrative follows the explorers down rivers, across the plains, and over the mountains to the Pacific. Supplementing Faber's account are journal quotations that offer firsthand reportage of events, conditions, and reflections about the journey. The last chapter tells what happened to significant members of the expedition and includes information on the Lewis and Clark Trail. Source notes are appended.

Ferdinand Magellan demonstrates the enormity of the explorer's achievement in providing "the first hard evidence that the world is round" and covers the extreme hardships of the voyage and the cultural conflict that led to Magellan's death. Meltzer's wry comments make history anything but dry. Recounting Magellan's order to have nothing to do with native women "unless they were baptized as Christians," he notes, "Of course that made every sailor an ardent missionary."
