About the Author

Dr. Gill Robinson Hickman is professor emerita in the Jepson School of Leadership Studies, University of Richmond. An inaugural faculty member of the Jepson School, she participated in its institution building and course development and has held positions as dean, professor of Public Administration, and Human Resource director. She has published several books and numerous articles/book chapters in the field of leadership studies. Her experience has led to invitations as presenter at the China Executive Leadership Academy Pudong (CELAP), Shanghai, China; the Leadership in Central Europe Conference at Palacky University in Olomouc, Czech Republic; and a panel member at international conferences in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, Guadalajara, Mexico, and Canada. She was a faculty presenter at the prestigious Salzburg Seminar in Salzburg, Austria and at the University of the Western Cape in South Africa where she presented a conceptual framework for leadership and transformation for regional governments in South Africa.

About the Author
Marie-Claire Blais is the author of more than 20 novels, 5 plays, and collections of poetry and short stories. She is the recipient of the Prix France-Canada and the prestigious Prix Médicis and was the first North American writer invited to join Belgium's prestigious Academy of French Language and Literature. She lives in Key West, Florida. Mary Meigs is an American painter who emigrated to Canada and is best known for her literary contributions. Derek Coltman has worked as a translator for more than five decades and has translated many of the most recognized contemporary French authors. Priscila Uppal is a poet, a fiction writer, and a professor of humanities and English at York University. Her work has been translated into Croatian, Dutch, Greek, Italian, Korean, and Latvian. "Checklists" are the second useful feature of this atlas

Well, readers, now that we know how the first reviewer (a male pathologist) feels about women and specifically Dr. Elizabeth Montgomery (rather odd for a public Amazon review, don't you think?), let's talk about this lovely new textbook of GI pathology.

First of all, this is an atlas, so there are many, many more pictures than your typical text. There are 12 images of acute CMV gastritis; >20 images of normal variations in the small bowel; >20 of celiac/malabsorption; >30 of chronic colitis, etc. Each image is accompanied by an informative figure legend. For example: Figure 3.121 is in the section on medication injury. The image shows a high power view of crypts with abundant apoptosis. The legend explains that this is mycophenolate-induced injury, describes the confluent apoptotic activity, and gives a clinical scenario.

"Checklists" are the second useful feature of this atlas. Because the authors take a pattern-based approach to each entitiy (a reasonable way to organize pathologic entities, since we're all looking for patterns in our slides), each constellation of findings is described and given a differential diagnosis (a checklist). For example, there is a section on the "lymphocytic gastritis" pattern, which includes this checklist: infectious (Helicobacter, HIV), celiac, immune-mediated disorders (CVID, Crohn), Medications (ticlopidine, olmesartean,) and neoplasia. In my opinion, that's a very useful list to tick off when doing clinicopathologic correlation to provide good patient care. A sample of the other "checklists" in just the gastric section: reactive gastritis, acute gastritis, collagenous gastritis, gastric eosinosinophilia, gastric hyperplasia, and many more.

The final feature that I will mention in this review, and perhaps my favorite, is the "Sample Note." Here the authors provide an actual top-line diagnosis and note for the entity covered. Do you have a duodenum with increased intraepithelial lymphocytes but no villous blunting? There's a sample note for that. How about a possible syphilis proctocolitis? There's a sample note for that. Lichenoid pattern of the esophagus? There's a sample note for that. I always appreciate when experts in the field share their wording because clear communication is so important in our specialty.

I'll stop here and simply say that I think this is a good book for pathologists-in-training as well as practicing pathologists. Yes, it is succinct, and for that reason cannot be THE definitive text of non-neoplastic GI pathology, but that wasn't the authors' intent. Instead, this is an immensely practical book that I have pulled off of my shelf several times in just the past week.

Atlas of Gastrointestinal Pathology

Even books that come from renowned pathologists can be disappointing. This has been the case for me regarding the Atlas.
Yes it has a lot of very good pictures and is well organize. The thing is that for me the price is not remotely appropriate for what you get.
It called my attention because I really liked the pattern based approach of the practical pathology series, and as a general pathologist I appreciate a go to book for my every day practice, I find this is not the book for me.

The book of 420 pages is richly illustrated and has many good ideas, not all new but worth repeating
Is not a five stars because in my opinion five stars go to books essential for a library masterpieces that will remain in history etc, I must be old fashioned. More prosaic reasons follow: the topics covered are limited to non-neoplastic biopsies pathology and not all of them are or could possibly be present. There are some oddities mentioned that subtract from the text (pulse granulomas: are well known but seemed inappropriately stressed at length in the book) and some that add to it nice tidbits of information (e.g. pseudomelanosis duodeni). The risk is to take bits of information as if they were all there is to know about a topic. Inevitably the text "concentration" is uneven: rallying to some causes and blissfully shortchanging other as it is a atlas of a portion of pathology of the digestive ssytem
The price is outrageous, if I were an accountant I would look at this and consider a full blown book providing a lot of pictures and all there is to know in complete detail: the price hurts the book that is a cute exercise, a form of mental gymnastic in differential diagnosis in some areas of GI pathology. You decide if you need it based on your knowledge needs and wallet.

Different readings of difficult stories

While this book was originally published several years ago, the stories it presents may be new to many, even to practicing Jews and Christians. When was the last time you heard a sermon on the rape of Tamar? Trible's readings of these stories may also be new to many readers. I was so engaged by her work on these difficult texts that I literally could not stop reading until I had finished the whole book. I especially found interesting her insightful word studies. But the most significant aspect of Trible's book is her "reclaiming" of these stories so that they can be used to motivate us to work actively for justice so that others are not victims of such terror.

This is one of the most eye opening books I have read! Tribble writes clearly and candidly. Her stories of what happens to some of the women in the Bible are frightening. She is good at reading between the lines. Her chapter on the Levite's concubine in Judges is truly frightening. Her book definately makes the point that the Old Testament writings by and large were not kind to women. This is putting it mildly!

Disturbing and Brilliant!!

Two words, disturbing and brilliant, describe this book along with excellent exegesis applied through a feminist lens to the stories of four neglected women of the Bible. This should be required reading for every person in a position of church leadership and the lay person as well who deserves to be informed.

These stories are extremely tragic, but I found the Unnamed Woman (concubine) and the Daughter of Jephthah particularly upsetting. If you truly are devoted to the Bible and love the Good Book, you owe it to yourself to accept and deal with the violence and tragedy of it as well. Own it! Trible does this with her unique and profound insight that will not let you get away without rethinking these characters (because at times even the narrator (himself?) is in cahoots with the perpetrator/abuser). I like very much Trible's consistent methodology.

What I regret is why she didn't write more books! She has a skill and a voice that needs to be heard as she explores.

I must say also however that I agree with the quote in a prior review here that, "Trible does not communicate a sense of larger biblical patterns." I want to read more Trible! If in addition to four women she applied this to broader, Biblical patterns, yes this would be good!

About the Author

Dona Schneider, PhD, MPH, is Professor and Associate Dean in the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy at Rutgers University, where she has taught medical geography and epidemiology to undergraduate and graduates students for more than 25 years. Her research record includes more than 125 refereed journal articles, books and book chapters, mostly focusing on mortality, morbidity and risk factors for disease, especially for children and minorities.

David E. Lilienfeld, MD, MPH, MBA, is an internationally recognized expert and educator in epidemiology and public health history. He was a pioneering figure in the area of pharmacoepidemiology and has made many contributions across the spectrum of epidemiologic inquiry. Dr. Lilienfeld has held leadership roles in the establishment and growth of many of the professional societies in the epidemiology community, and has also served in an editorial capacity for several epidemiology journals. In addition to his scholarly endeavors, Dr. Lilienfeld has been a strong advocate for epidemiology within the pharmaceutical industry and he co-developed (with Bert Black) the template for the use of epidemiologic evidence in legal proceedings.

About the Author
Anne McCaffrey, one of the world’s most popular authors, is best known for her Dragonriders of Pern® series. She was the first woman to win the two top prizes for science fiction writing, the Hugo and Nebula awards. She was also given the American Library Association’s Margaret A. Edwards Award for Lifetime Literary Achievement in Young Adult Fiction, was inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame, and was named a Science Fiction Writers of America Nebula Grand Master. Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1926, McCaffrey relocated to Ireland in the 1970s, where she lived in a house of her own design, named Dragonhold-Underhill. She died in 2011.

Dragonriders of Pern (Kindle Edition)

First, I'd like to say that I love these books. I re-read them ever couple years and it's a fresh story with new meaning each time. For me it's a timeless series.

I offer many thanks to Anne MaCaffery and her son Todd McCaffery who has picked up the reins of story telling with the Realms of Pern.

As for the Kindle Edition of this book, I am sorely disappointed in the typographical errors. In a time when we have simple spell checking on just about every application we use, it's depressing to see this digital media plagued with such inconsideration for the reader.

The spelling of the character names are misspelled, sometimes from paragraph to paragraph. There are major typographical mistakes in connection words that require the reader to read, and then re-read the entire sentence to discern the actual word intended as different words could change then entire feel and meaning of the sentence.

Paying roughly the same for this Kindle Edition as I would for a new mass-market paperback, I question why anyone would pay full price when a print copy can be acquired, used, at a faction of the cost.

The Kindle Edition is a sad disservice to the readers and fans of Anne McCaffery.

Del Rey and Random House Digital should be ashamed of themselves for releasing such a poor quality product!!

EXCELLENT STORY, HORRIBLE EDITION

In The Dragonriders of Pern, Anne McCaffrey creates a stunning and richly detailed world. It's clear on reading these stories that they are very dear to McCaffrey's heart. Her blend of science, music and human drama are supported by a wholly believable mythology which bridges the gap between our earth and Pern.
Unfortunately, this edition was hastily thrown together without any regard for the author's hard work. On seemingly every page there are typographical errors so severe that McCaffrey's spell is broken. Character names constantly shift spelling. Words are misspelled, mixed up and changed to the point that the prose completely falls apart. At times geographic locations on Pern are switched with character names...this is a work of Science Fiction/Fantasy but when the place where you live starts talking all believability goes out the window. The sloppy editing of the edition was so bad I ended up buying individual copies of Dragonflight, Dragonquest and The White Dragon. I noticed none of the errors I saw in the three-in-one volume.
I highly recommend reading Dragonflight, Dragonquest, and The White Dragon, but save yourself the confusion and disappointment of this three-in-one edition. Buy each separately.

This is the first book I bought on my kindle and I was sorely disappointed in this version of the books. There were many errors in all three books and it left so many plots unexplained. I ended up buying the full versions of the original books and wish I hadn't wasted my money on this one.

I wanted to work in this field and was considering this major. However, I was not sure if Procurement and Contract Management was for me. So, I bought this book. Every chapter was so intriguing that I finished the whole book in one go! I was very much impressed with the quality of the book. Some people might even say that you get all the information on the Internet these days. But my question is – where else would you get such original perspectives from multiple top professors in one place? Where else would you get information from the top minds of the world which you can trust? Why consider a career in this field? Why study Procurement and Contract Management after all? I liked this book on Procurement and Contract Management. This book helped me clearly understand what actually Procurement and Contract Management is. For just $10, this peer-reviewed/academic book is a real bargain. I was confused as to what to choose for my undergraduate major and this book opened up my eyes. I found this book also useful for graduate or PhD studies. The good thing is that - there are so many top professors writing the insightful chapters in plain English for the students like myself. I think it will save the students (and their parents) thousands of dollars because changing the major again and again will cost them lots of money. I showed this book to my parents and they were glad I bought it. Yes - I highly recommend it. It will be a major decision of your life – if you are considering a career in this field, you must know why study Procurement and Contract Management.

Answers are in the book but I can say with 100% conviction that you will not be disappointed by buying this book. In fact, many college students change their majors and it simply wastes their time (and of course their parents' money). If you buy this book, you will be able to save thousands of dollars for your parents in tuition fees. Graduating months earlier means you will have more opportunity. I read chapter by chapter and found all the chapters very insightful. Look at the universities - all the professors come from top universities, and they offer very insightful tips. Trust me - Procurement for the Curious is a must-read book for the students and people who are undecided about their career options.

About the Author
John L. Worrall is Professor of Criminology and Program Head at the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD). A Seattle native, he received a B.A., double majoring in psychology and law and justice, from Central Washington University in 1994. Both his M.A. (criminal justice) and Ph.D. (political science) were received from Washington State University, where he graduated in 1999. From 1999-2006, he was a member of the criminal justice faculty at California State University, San Bernardino. He joined UTD in Fall 2006, was promoted to full professor in 2008, and in 2010 was selected to direct the criminology program. Dr. Worrall has published articles and book chapters on a wide range of topics ranging from legal issues in policing to crime measurement, having recently been ranked one of the most prolific sole and lead authors in the discipline. Courses he regularly teaches (and has authored texts for) include introductory criminal justice, criminal procedure, and crime control policy. As Program Head at UTD, Dr. Worrall directs undergraduate, M.S., and Ph.D. programs in criminology, including an online MS program, which he developed. He is active in the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences, the American Society of Criminology, and a number of regional associations. Finally, he continues to serve as editor of the journal Police Quarterly, a position he has held since 2008.

First time with Kindle for PC and eText book.

I like that I can search for words or phrases quickly, or go straight to a page with something that I'm looking for. I like that I can click on the table of contents and be at that page. I like that I can scroll from page to page and jump around in the book. I can zoom in and I can reduce to see the whole page for skimming headings. It's versatile and effective and easy to read.

The book itself is a decent book. What can you say, unless you're an instructor you don't usually get to choose which book you want to use. But, it seems to be a very good book, well put together, with case studies to help enhance understanding and application.

This book presents the latest data on power plants and provides much needed formulas and rules of thumb for sizing equipment based on plant size and arrangement. The book has many examples of equipment and has a good section although somewhat out of date on permitting of power plants. I would recommend it for any power plant engineer especially those just entering the power generation industry.

This book contain tons of information suitable for engineers in practice at any level as well as students taking up power plant course.
I am an enthusiast with boilers and thermal power plants...I'm happy with this Book in my side along with Steam.
I'm looking forward for an updated edition.

This is most probably a Bible for who wants to learn about power plants, and I would rate it better than "Steam" as it is 360°C around the boiler, up to the transmission lines. This book is It is really complete, you just need time to read it.
