It's A Homecoming Just Like The Waltons, Except With Guns, Drugs, Sex, and Club Hookahs

Loved it! By the time I finished reading UnBeloved, I felt as if I had just hopped off a roller coaster. This book had me crying, nervous, laughing, and filled with excitement.
UnBeloved is the 4th book in the saga of Hell's Horsemen Motorcycle Club. I think it's safe to say that this series has moved from just being an MC romance genre to an MC story. This installment deals primarily with the aftermath and dealing with the wounds, both physically and emotionally, from the relationship between Jase/Dorothy/Hawk from years earlier, betrayal from one of the brothers, the spiraling downfall of a former brother, the Russian Mafia, and finding redemption and hope in places that one doesn't expect to find it. If this story feels different than previous stories, that's because it is different. This story doesn't deal with a new love, rather it is dealing with the aftermath of two love affairs that span nearly 20 years.
Before I launch into a full review of UnBeloved, I want to talk about the UnDeniable series as a whole. Only a few books have connected with me in such a way that I want to experience them over and over. The in-depth writing of Madeline Sheehan provokes my imagination and connects me to characters that I never thought I could relate. This series is pioneering because the author has taken a band of outlaws, old ladies, and club bunnies; characters so varied, and gives them each a unique voice. At times their tale is sad and tragic, yet we see humor, loyalty, and undying love. Sheehan portrays their beauty and flaws honestly, never apologizing or pleading with the reader to embrace them. Also trailblazing is that the characters are allowed to age, and it's never been so evident than in this fourth book. Whether or not it was the author's intent, she is breaking new ground because the reader watches as the young, flighty women from the earlier books progress from their 20s and 30s , into their 40s and 50s. *gasp* Book characters having a life and sex after 40; I thought at that age, they were supposed to be lead out into a pasture to wait for the Grim Reaper; never to be seen again in the story.
UnBeloved is the story of Dorothy, Jase, and Hawk, and how the actions of each affected not only them, but the lives of their families. If I could only use a few words to describe UnBeloved, they would be "redemption", "forgiveness" AND "homecoming". In UnBeautifully, we saw how their love turned into an F5 tornado, creating a path of destruction for not only them but everyone around them. Chrissy, Jase's wife, was convicted of first degree attempted murder for shooting a very pregnant Dorothy, Dorothy shunning both men and the club, Jase losing his mistress and family, and Hawk leaving his brothers and going nomad. Seven years later, the trio still haven't addressed the carnage left by their love vortex, until an emergency has everyone coming home, and the trio is finally forced to walk through the broken mess, and assess the damage and rebuild. The story begins with Dorothy being called back to Miles City, Montana due to an emergency. Once she is inside the clubhouse, she is informed that one of the Horsemen isn't who he has claimed to be and has been covering up his past. So the entire club is reeling from this betrayal, and also from one of their own being held hostage. In dealing with the dire situation, Dorothy is forced to a day of reckoning, seven years after surviving the gunshot, she has to deal with the issues from her past. Jase is also forced to come to terms with the poor choices made years ago. Instead of hiding from the issues like Dorothy did by moving away, Jase has hid from them inside a liquor bottle. Jase's road to redemption comes from the most unlikely source. When he finally comes face-to-face, he knows that he has to make amends and stop the vicious cycle. Hawk has literally ran from all the problems from the past, going nomad and seeking refuge in the road. Now all the running and hiding comes to an abrupt halt. As in any family, when there is an emergency and the chips are down, everyone comes together, and this MC family is no different.
Once again I get to see my favorite character, "DEEEEEEEEUUUUUUCCCCEEEE!". What can I say, I've loved him since UnDeniable; even when he was an a-- hole at times. My love for Deuce has not wavered, if anything, it has grown. Deuce is still a force to be reckoned with, and it is never more evident than the scene on the highway between he and Preacher, and when he and Ripper pay a visit to Hawk. Cox and Kami are still fighting as usual, and Cox's humor has grown even more vulgar and dirty, as impossible as that seems. OMG, that one scene had me laughing and gagging at the same time. Eva's influence on the club is evident in how everyone, including the women, views it not as a club, but rather another home. The women have formed tight bonds, and just like the Horsemen being brothers, the gals also have a sisterhood.

I have to talk about my two favorite scenes: 1. the highway scene and 2. the Vegas arena scene. The highway scene, oh that highway scene, that one is my favorite. Sheehan's writing is pure perfection, from her description of the surroundings to the bantering between the characters, if I felt anymore immersed in that scene, I would have needed to throw on my coat and gloves. The spoken dialogue and unspoken thoughts from each character is profound, beautiful, and insightful. That scene showcases how the men have progressed since the beginning of the series; it's powerful and serene at the same time. The Vegas scene, let's just say that I had goosebumps when Sheehan first walks us through the arena, that scene is dark and scary. I didn't know what to expect. Okay, no more, because I don't want to give away a spoiler......
As the characters find reckoning, redemption, forgiveness, and peace during their homecoming; some say a sad goodbye. Like a regular family, sometimes we lose members, and this story is no different: one deciding to take the road that leads to home, one's path taking him to jail where he doesn't pass GO and collect $200, and ZZ's route, let's just call Z's road "psycho path", and a couple of bikers that take the journey on that eternal highway through the Harley Davidson's pearly gates. In the words of Dorothy Kelley Matthews "This is the story of us all...all our fates intertwined, and for that reason alone, pain and death be damned, I wouldn't change a thing." As for me, I wouldn't miss the ride on a rocky road with this band of outlaws, old ladies, and club hookahs for anything. Vroom, vroom!!

I wanted so much more...

I was SO excited and anxious to read this book and while I did not dislike it, I just wanted SO MUCH MORE from this book. The build up to finally learning the details of the Jase-Dorothy-Hawk triangle was EPIC, and we literally learn almost nothing new about the SEVENTEEN years Jase and Dorothy had an affair and the THIRTEEN years Hawk and Dorothy had an affair. I wanted the angst, the pain, the waiting for Jase to leave his wife, the promises, the lies, the betrayal, the guilt, the sneaking around, I WANTED IT ALL. And all we got was about 4 brief flashbacks into all those years and it didn't really give me any understanding of what it was really like for all of them while it was happening. The entire book is set 7 years after Dorothy got shot and Jase learned about her and Hawk. There is no triangle and Jase is nearly a non-entity in the book and even the final goodbye b/t him and Dorothy is anti-climactic and not fitting for two people who destroyed so many lives over the course of 17 years just to be together. We never learned why Jase never left his wife either. And frankly, the only character who came out looking somewhat stable was Hawk. I even felt bad for Chrissy (Jase's wife), but couldn't really relate at all to Dorothy.
Sheehan told us a little, but didn't show us anything. I felt NO connection between Jase and Dorothy, I was just told that they had strong feelings for eachother for all those years, but got almost zero interaction between them. Hawk has a bit more interaction with D, but it's all present tense and so much time has passed since their affair began, it's almost a tepid relationship. And that is just sad, this book should have been SO MUCH MORE.
So in recap, here's what I wanted and did not get:
- The 17 years Jase and Dorothy were together.
- The 13 years Hawk and Dorothy were together
- Why Jase never left Chrissy
- The aftermath of Jase finding out about Hawk & Dorothy in detail
- Details of the 7 years between the shooting and Dorothy returning to the MC. All of Jase and Hawk trying to get to her, her pretending not to know them, etc.
I am still giving this book 3 stars b/c I did read it quickly, but man am I disappointed. I've put ZZ's book on my GR "want-to-read" shelf, but I won't be buying it the day it comes out b/c I don't have complete faith it's going to be worth the wait.

Even though I knew going into this one that I wasn't going to be gaga over these 3 and their situation, I did expect the "Love Triangle" to be a little more intense & developed, considering all the events that happened in previous books concerning Hawk, Dorothy, & Jase that led us to their book.
I appreciated the little snippets of how things got rolling in the first place concerning their past, but it still just lacked something. It wasn't raw or really all that deep or emotional for majority of the book. Even the flashbacks lacked depth. They didn't tell/show me WHY Dorothy remained with Jase in spite of everything, all those years. They didn't show me why she ultimately turned to Hawk all those years ago & couldn't just walk away from him either. Why she felt torn between these 2 men in the first place and why she ultimately couldn't choose between them. NONE of this was given within their story.
And I still for the life of me can't understand why these two men were so crazy in love & sprung on a woman like Dorothy to begin with. The woman had no education at all. She didn't even have a GED. No ambition or drive for life outside of wanting someone to love her in all her "bland personality glory". She had no back bone to speak of. No fire within her or pride for herself. So.... I just don't get this all consuming love & lust Jase & Hawk had for her, then or now.
The story, all of it, just read as very impersonal and boring to me. Like we only received the headlines & not the true meat of the story. It just wasn't all that interesting for me.
I felt that the book had good pacing & other things going on early on, mainly concerning just Hawk and his past. These things were a bit intriguing to me. But once I hit the 48% mark of this book, the story, pacing, everything began to drag and become quite lackluster. Honestly, this one didn't really start to become somewhat interesting or touching, til about the last 15% of the novel. Almost like Ms. Sheehan finally got her groove with the story & characters. But by then it was way too late. And the strength we are "Told" Dorothy finally embraces just was not convincing. At. All.
But like I said before, I really expected this type of journey/outcome with these characters anyway. So I'm not really all that disappointed cos I was right, just wish there was something else to kind of grab onto or truly appreciate about the novel. Well, I can count on 3 fingers, instances that were truly funny to me. So I guess that's something.
Jase- is a freakin cry baby. I didn't really care for his redemption/sobriety plot, until the tail end of the book. But I also never cared for Jase anyway. I did like Hawk, and honestly he's the reason why I read the book.
But I have to be honest here, this was the most tame & unsexy novel in this series. WHERE WAS THE HOTNESS?! There was none. And I am NOT exaggerating here. Considering the standard already placed here for this series, this book most certainly missed the mark. It didn't even get close to the mark. If you weren't getting a fade to black scene, you got a HIGHLY glossed over one. So not only was there not a real story here, there wasn't anything to somewhat appease me for so many things that this one was lacking. *shrugs*
So I understand why many readers were not happy with this book. It really should have been released as a Novella or better yet, as Ms Carrie pointed out, just a side story in Dirty & Ellie's book. (Which we are never getting) or you know what? This story shouldn't have been released at all, IMO.
The Epilogue I don't get the "ick factor" or uncertainty that many claim they feel concerning this. Maybe cos it didn't bother me in book 1 either. But I gotta say ZZ definitely has me curious to find out. Honestly, I was hoping for his book in place of this one. I've wanted ZZ's story for awhile now.
So.. No. I wouldn't recommend this read. If you want to know what the end result is leading into the next book? Borrow it and only read the last 20% and you will be good. Trust me, anything before that 20%, you're not missing out on much.
