From School Library Journal
Gr 10 Up-A rap on the window awakens 13-year-old Charlie Bucktin. He's startled to find Jasper Jones, the bad boy of his small Australian town, frantic and in need of his help. Charlie follows Jasper into the night and is led to the battered body of Laura Wishart, hanging from the noose of a eucalyptus tree. Jasper is desperate to cut Laura down as the rope around her neck belongs to him. Convinced of Jasper's innocence, Charlie helps submerge Laura's body in a river and the boys vow to find Laura's killer. Set in the 1960s during the Vietnam War, Craig Silvey's novel (Knopf, 2011) perfectly captures the time period. Charlie's small town reacts with fear at Laura's disappearance and the bigotry simmering just below the surface of the town erupts into violence. Matt Cowlrick gives each character a unique voice and his pacing is impeccable. Strong language and mature content make this appropriate for older teens.-Tricia Melgaard, formerly Broken Arrow Public Schools, Tulsa, OKα(c) Copyright 2011. Review
Starred Review, Kirkus Reviews, March 15, 2011:
"The author’s keen ear for dialogue is evident in the humorous verbal sparring between Charlie and Jeffrey, typical of smart 13-year-old boys...A richly rewarding exploration of truth and lies by a masterful storyteller."

Starred Review, The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books, April 2011:
"Silvey’s sure-footed, evocative prose, intelligent humor, and careful plot structuring may well ensure this Aussie import lasting status."

Starred Review, The Horn Book Magazine, May/June 2011:
"The mood and atmosphere of the 1960s small-town Australian setting is perfectly realized—suspenseful, menacing, and claustrophobic—with issues of race and class boiling just below the surface."

Starred Review, School Library Journal, June 2011:
"Silvey is a master of wit and words, spinning a coming-of-age tale told through the mind of a young Holden Caulfield."

Multi-Layered Story
By PDXbibliophile
Jasper Jones is an intense read on several levels. Young protagonist, Charlie, often makes references to his latest favorite book, To Kill A Mockingbird, and there many similarities in these two novels. Jasper Jones is set in 1960's small rural town Australia. Like To Kill A Mockingbird, Charlie's town is being poisoned by poverty, prejudice, gossip, alcoholism and despair. Charlie ends up in the center of the town's unraveling when he promises his classmate, Jasper, he will keep a horrible secret about something Jasper has discovered - a secret that is the inciting event for dragging all of the town's deplorable secrets out in the open. Charlie is just trying to do the right thing, but how can it be right, if it is causing so many negative consequences? The story has a gripping opening that leads the reader to believe Jasper Jones is a mystery, and it is, partly.
"And I see it. And everything changes. I'm screaming, but they are muffled screams. I can't breathe in. I feel like I'm underwater. Deaf and drowning..."
"We can't tell anybody Charlie. We have to find out who did this."
The first thing readers will think is, how are two young teens going to solve such a huge mystery? The mystery doesn't crop up again for 200 pages. Most of the story focuses on Charlie trying to survive his decision to keep the secret, and his trying to understand what is happening to all of these people he has known all of his life. But when the Charlie and Jasper finally step up to solve the mystery, it brings surprise twists and surprise ending. Like To Kill A Mockingbird, Jasper Jones is foremost a coming of age story. Also like To Kill A Mockingbird, it does not have a happily ever after ending, but it does have a realistic and satisfying ending.

An instant classic
By D Putri
It took me a while to pick up this book as I must have been put off by the publisher hype that calls Jasper Jones 'the Australian "To Kill of a Mockingbird". But once I got started on it, I could not put it down.

The opening hooked me in instantly. How could it not? The book, set in summer 1965 in the regional mining town of Corrigan, opens with bookish teen Charles Bucktin led into the bush by indigenous boy and local troublemaker Jasper Jones, only to discover Laura Wishart, a girl from school, hanging dead from a tree.

The little world of Corrigan set the perfect stage to depict the racial prejudice imposed on Jasper Jones. A prejudice that would have seen someone like Jasper arrested and convicted without a fair trial, no matter how far from truth the charges are. That is why Charles and Jasper had to take matters in their own hand. They had to find the killer before the body is found.

Despite of the gut wrenching opening, to my delight, Jasper Jones is not a detective story. It is a classic coming age story, where Charles Bucktin has his eyes opened to the realities of his small town existence - racism, domestic abuse, small town parochialism and downright ignorance.

For instance, very much like 1930s America, racism was at its peak in 1960s Australia. In this story, racially motivated hatred and action were widely tolerated. Charles, who narrates the tale, also witnesses racially motivated hatred and violence directed towards best friend, Jeffrey Lu, the son of a Vietnamese migrant. Even though Jeffrey is a brilliant kid with the wittiest comebacks, he is reduced to a mute in the face of bullying.

The author delivers the story without the doom and gloom that would usually accompany such subject matter. In fact, it almost seems like Jasper Jones, the book, is not taking itself too seriously. There is lightheartedness and childish wit in tragedy. Charles Bucktin provided a dose wisdom that goes beyond his age yet within character as gis teenage impulses still dominate the storytelling.

Aside of Jeffrey, Charles also discovers an unexpected ally in Laura's sister Eliza. In fact, her presence in his life gradually blossoms info a romantic relationship. This plagues him secretly as he harbours the terrible secret of Laura's disappearance. Meanwhile the town descends into paranoia and erupts in frantic search efforts at the slightest stir as Laura's whereabouts remains a mystery.

The dialogues between the young characters were my favourite parts of the book. Random banter about how stripes got onto toothpastes and whether one would choose to wear a hat made of live spiders or would rather have a hand full of penises instead were absolutely authentic, funny and heartwarming. It also evoked a sense of nostalgia and even more so, as it is filled with pop culture references of days gone by like Audrey Hepburn movies.

In sum, 'Jasper Jones' is a superb literary work that deserves to be listed as an Australian classic. Highly recommended.

Reminds me of "DeGrassi"
By Dienne
In my college days, we used to gather in the lounge in the late afternoons on weekdays eagerly awaiting the next episode of "DeGrassi Junior High" (which became "DeGrassi High" my second year). It seemed like every possible calamity and scandal struck those poor kids, so much so that it became the House sport to guess the next Big Event - who would get pregnant, who was using drugs, whose parents would split, who'd get what disease, etc. It was hardly realistic, but then, it wasn't really meant to be - it was an after-school special designed to get kids talking about important topics (and to entertain bored college students).

This book reminded me a lot of that old show, and, in fact, I had a few "DeGrassi moments" when some new explosive secret would burst open. This book has it all. Jasper Jones is basically an abandoned street waif. His mother died in an accident when he was little and his father's been a raging drunk ever since. He's been outcast by the townsfolk who blame him for every unexplained mishap and tragedy. And to top it off, what he finds in the little clearing he uses as his home away from home threatens his very existence in the small mining town of Corrigan, Australia (which could just as easily be any town in America, minus the Australian slang).

Charlie Bucktin is a nerdy kid, unblessed with athletic prowess in a town where sports are currency. His tyrannical mother dominates his existence and there's not support to be had from his mild-mannered father. His parents' already rocky marriage is about to be blown apart by one more of Corrigan's many toxic secrets.

Charlie's best friend Jeffery Lu and his family are refugees from Vietnam who are treated like the town's social project - pitied and tolerated, but only so long as they don't cause trouble. And trouble could be something as simple as his father having a job when other Corrigan men are out of work. But at least they're not dying in Vietnam like his mother's family. Undersized Jeffrey is tormented mercilessly by the athletic boys, but he hardly seems to notice as he cheerfully comes back for more, all in the hopes of getting to play cricket.

And Eliza Wishart, the quiet, aloof girl Charlie secretly has his hopes set on, has troubles of her own. Her sister is "missing" and Eliza knows more than she's letting on. Meanwhile, her father, town president and pillar of the community, has some secrets of his own.

When Laura Wishart goes "missing", these four characters and their families are drawn into a heaving swirl of drama that will ultimately both reveal and further bury the ugly secrets that have festered in the town for so long. While there is a certain happy resolution to the story, basically life in Corrigan will go on as before with the same fetid drama continuing to play out.

I agree with reviewers who say that this is not really a plot-focused book. White a lot seems to happen, and often dramatically, few events seem to move the plot along. The book opens as a mystery, but we really make little progress solving that mystery, instead getting sidetracked by the relationships among the characters and the drama of their ordinary lives. When the mystery is solved, it's all at once, as told by one character is a rather anti-climactic sort of way. The plot turns, such as they are, are either too predictable or too left field. The relationship between Jasper and "Mad Jack" Lionel is obvious from the start, where as Charlie's climactic encounter with his mother was one of my "oh come on" DeGrassi moments.

I'm not even so sure I agree that the characters are all that well done (although I do agree the books is heavily character focused). Certain aspects are done really well. The bantering relationship between Charlie and Jeffrey was fresh, genuine and very clever (and spot on with the Superman vs. Batman debated). Also, the budding, uneasy relationship between Charlie and Jasper felt pretty genuine and believable. But other aspects didn't seem so believable. Charlie's mother, for instance, is just unexplainably off-the-wall hostile. yes, we understand that she's frustrated living in Corrigan, and yes, we understand she's been spoiled by her rich, doting family in the city. But it doesn't quite gel into a believable portrait of a woman who could be that unfeeling and cruel to her own son.

Even Charlie doesn't seem to add up, or, at least his role in the story doesn't. Of all the kids/people in Corrigan, Charlie was the only one that Jasper felt he could turn to? Why? Why not someone older and wiser? What was it about Charlie that drew him, and how did he even really know Charlie? And once Charlie was involved, what was his role? I kept expecting Charlie to make a difference, even a small one. He could have, for instance, stood up for Jasper, or even Jeffrey, even in a small way. Charlie spends the book worrying about doing the "right" thing, but then he never really does much of anything. Eliza and Jasper to the work of the story, while Charlie just seems like a frame through which to view everything.

Overall, this book is enjoyable enough if you're simply looking for a light read (and especially if you're a cricket fan), but it sours a little upon closer reflection. There are a few other holes that I haven't touched on because it's hard to say much without giving too much away. The book does do an admirable job of exploring the dark secrets that often lurk beneath the "too nice" life of the most "respectable" members of society. The target audience will probably appreciate that aspect, as they're probably become aware of it in their own lives. Jasper, Charlie, Jeffrey, and, to a lesser extent, Eliza are all engaging characters which helps make it a decent read. I'd say this book is a good effort from a relatively new author with some good potential, but I'd look for more from future books.

Review

"This succinct compilation of some of the important ideas and findings in Positive Psychology provides a handy reference for those new to the field and a useful taster for those who wish to delve more deeply." - Professor Felicia A Huppert, University of Cambridge, UK

"This book offers an empirically based, rigorously scientific approach to a rapidly changing and expanding field. Undergraduates and graduate students will much appreciate the accessible presentation, ample graphics, and personal development questions, while professionals will be pleased with the up-to-date, sensible coverage of this thoroughly revised edition. The next generation of positive psychology textbooks has arrived!" - Grant Rich, University of Alaska, USA

Praise for the first edition:

"Carr's Positive Psychology is a magisterial text, an enormously informative and inclusive synthesis of this new branch of science. It is a model of a contemporary textbook, with references to websites, useful copies of test forms, and provocative questions at the end of chapters. The positive psychology movement is fortunate to rate such an excellent textbook so soon after its inception." - Mihaly Csikszentmihaly, Claremont Graduate University, California, USA

"This book does more than provide a thorough review of the extant research in positive psychology - it outlines available resources, methods of measurement, offers a critique of available research and makes recommendations for further reading and research. Alan Carr's background in systemic psychotherapy and critical psychology enables him to add theoretical richness to the field of positive psychology by integrating contextual and relational perspectives with this inherently individualistic approach." - Arlene Vetere, University of East London, UK

a pleasant and enjoyable text to read for a class
By Susan Nelson
Excellent textbook, I purchased this particular textbook to get me through my Positive Psychology class because the Positive Psychology written by Compton and Hoffman was so terrible and didn't even have a glossary!! This text, I can reassure you has a glossary, is to the point and is highly readable and a pleasant and enjoyable text to read for a class!!

Not a textbook I would use again
By V. Fruiht
My professors chose this as one of the texts for a graduate level course in Positive Psychology one semester and have since stopped using it. The book was easy to read, but not very applicable to the true intent of positive psychology research, despite it's name. Moreover, nearly every example was clinical, and focused on disorder. This may be a useful book to "ease" clinically minded students into the idea of positive psychology and does offer a table of contents that covers most of the important bases if you are looking to learn a little more about positive psych, but I certainly wouldn't recommend it to serve as an introduction, or even supplemental higher level reading in positive psych for most courses. Chapters are lacking in content and tend to stray into more clinical topics rather than discuss what the chapter title promises. If you're looking for a positive psych text for students check out the Primer by Peterson or the big Snyder & Lopez text.

Positive Psychology
By Robert W. Reasoner
This book is long overdue. It provides a great summary of the research related to happiness, motivation, hope and optimism, and self-esteem. It is perhaps best used as a reference for a college course, but it provides an accurate reflection of research and theory in this new field of psychology.

Was She Who You Think She Was?
By L. Slaydon
Mary Magdalene has received a lot of press in the last few years. Does she deserve it? This is a wonderful study of what we do know about Mary of Magdala and her relationship with Jesus and his disciples.
The first half of the book is Liz Curtis Higgs' modern-day tale of Mad Mary and serves as a basis for the Bible study to follow. You will not want to put down this story.
We usually use pretty serious works for our ladies Bible Study. But we have really enjoyed the Bad Girls of the Bible series by Liz Higgs! The modern version of the Bible story is very useful in applying the lessons to our own lives. Liz employs lots of sarcasm and personal experience to get her points across. We recommend all of these books for personal or group study.

Review
"Authentic Intellectual Work provides an effective framework for educators as we move from unpacking CCSS to a focus on instruction and assessment.  Your entire community will appreciate this research and evidenced based approach to closing significant achievement gaps through a focus on what matters most - engaging our youth in meaningful work that prepares them for college and careers. Add this to your Must Read list!" (Jill Gildea, Superintendent of Schools)

“In a time when education and the world focus too much on testing, Newmann, Carmichael, and King present a set a compelling alternatives based on in-depth research and experience.  Their emphasis on rigor will support meaningful learning and transcend some of the silliness we all confront daily.” (Peter Dillon, Superintendent of Schools)

“Schools are looking for ways to help staff transition to the Common Core and that involves significant changes in the type of work teachers use with students.  Authentic Intellectual Work appears to be a great way to make that happen.” (Richard A. Simon, Adjunct Instructor Educational Administration)

“Authentic Intellectual Work is a powerful design for enhancing success for students across ability, ethnicity, and socioeconomics. Although similar ideas have been introduced in the field of education, AIW provides clear parameters for instruction that is authentic.” (Debbie Tracht, Learning Specialist, Professional Development Provider)

"Newmann and colleagues offer a refreshing approach to research and professional development, which deeply honors teachers' critical inquiry and collaboration.  Thanks to their insights, educators finally have a framework for promoting rigor and relevance across all grades and subjects.  Those who join this journey will reap the rewards of increased teacher engagement and improved student learning."

(Linda Darling-Hammond, Charles E. Ducommun Professor of Education)

"Many school administrators, teachers, and parents have responded to the adoption of the Common Core State Standards with a mixture of fear, loathing, and panic. Newmann, Carmichael, and King explain how the AIW framework can enable educators to overcome those fears while building the culture of collaboration and trust required for successful school reform. Importantly, they also show how collective professional development among teachers and school leaders can enhance educators' learning and practice leading to improved, more equitable student outcomes." (Greg Anrig, Vice President of The Century Foundation and Author of Beyond the Education Wars: Evidence That Collaboration Builds Effective Schools.)

“Since my first encounter with AIW, I've been inspired because it isn't about formulas or panaceas. Rather, this framework is about the meaningful unpacking of practice in a way that connects us to our classrooms and helps us see rigor as a catalyst, not an imposition. In short, it's a cornerstone of my practice.” (Sarah Brown Wessling, 2010 National Teacher of the Year)

“AIW serves as the foundation for systemic change by providing tools that allows teachers to take risks and be reflective of their practices in the ever changing landscape of education.”      (Lesley Stancarone, Principal)

Authentic Intellectual Work: Improving Teaching for Rigorous Learning offers educators a valuable framework for constructing the kinds of learning we would hope all of our students experience – grounded in serious inquiry around the topics well-equipped citizens must be prepared to address in an informed society. Just as important, the authors assist school and system leaders in building educator capacity to create these learning experiences in schools, recognizing that schools cannot achieve the aims of any rigorous student standards without first ensuring that educators are well supported and prepared to teach in differing and demanding ways. (Stephanie Hirsh, Executive Director)

"This important new book is a tremendous resource for teachers, school administrators, and policymakers. Rooted in more than 20 years of rigorous research, this exceptionally clear and example-packed book makes a compelling case for why authentic intellectual work should be at the centerpiece of the school curriculum—across all grades and subjects." (Diana Hess, Dean of the School of Education and Professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction)

"This is the definitive volume on “authentic intellectual work”. It will guide educators in the collaboration they need to challenge each other's practices toward ever-increasing rigor, a fundamental building block of 21st century learning." (Ken Kay, CEO)

"Authentic Intellectual Work has had a profound impact on policy, practice, and research in Australia for nearly two decades. Both the research and the professional development presented in this volume are compelling." (Jennifer Gore, Professor and Director)

About the Author

Dr. Fred M. Newmann, Emeritus Professor of Curriculum and Instruction, University of Wisconsin–Madison, began his education career teaching high school history and social studies in 1959.  Dissatisfied with prevailing curriculum and instruction, he completed doctoral studies at Harvard and began to attack the broader question:  In what ways can institutions, especially schools, in a modern culture be shaped to enhance community?

This led to research and development of social studies and civic education curriculum, to planning an alternative school, to studies of alienation in secondary schools, theories of democratic citizenship, student community service, higher order thinking in high school curriculum, new approaches to student assessment, the restructuring of public, elementary, middle, and high schools, and professional development to build capacity in low-income schools.

At Wisconsin, he taught graduate courses in curriculum and assessment and directed national centers on Effective Secondary Schools and on Organization and Restructuring of Schools (k-12) which generated the initial research on Authentic Intellectual Work that was used in research on Chicago Public School reform. He has published widely and is recognized internationally as a leader in reform of curriculum, instruction and schooling.  He retired from the University of Wisconsin in 2001, and since 2007 helped develop the approach to professional development sponsored by the Center for Authentic Intellectual Work.

Dr. Dana L. Carmichael began her teaching career in Japan. After five years, she joined Minneapolis Public Schools as a social studies teacher. In 1995, Dana earned a Fulbright Scholarship, to write authentic curriculum in Namibia on how education promotes democracy in new nations. Her international background, which included living in Chile, Spain and Austria as a child, led her to pursue a PhD in Comparative International Development in Education Studies in the Department of Policy and Administration at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, which she completed in 2003.

Ultimately her passion for teaching urban students kept her in the Twin Cities. She first learned about Dr. Newmann’s work in the Mid-1990’s while serving as the K-12 District Social Studies Curriculum Specialist. She and Dr. Patricia Avery (University of Minnesota) collaborated on a number of early AIW projects. Her experiences directing these projects, including a Minnesota Best Practices grant (2000) and Federal Teaching American History (2001-2004), combined with additional experiences, including Director of NCLB, Staff Development Director, and Learning Forward academy graduate (2007), prepared her to accept Newmann’s invitation to join him and Dr. King on the Iowa-AIW project. Since 2008, she has served as Executive Director of the Center for Authentic Intellectual, based in Saint Paul, Minnesota, where she lives with her husband and two children. For more information about how the Center and supports educators learn to sustain transformational reform by promoting academic rigor through teacher reflection, visit the Center website at www.centerforaiw.com

Dr. M. Bruce King is a Faculty Associate with the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis (ELPA) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His work in ELPA concentrates on teaching courses on instructional leadership and teacher capacity, coordinating the Wisconsin Idea PhD cohort program in K–12 leadership, and building effective partnerships between the department and schools and districts.

Bruce has been a researcher with the Wisconsin Center for Education Research, where he contributed to two studies focused on Authentic Intellectual Work, the Research Institute on Secondary Education Reform for Youth with Disabilities and the Center for Organization and Restructuring of Schools. He received his PhD in curriculum and instruction from UW-Madison and taught upper elementary, middle, and high school for 11 years in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Quito, Ecuador.

Bruce has been a research fellow at the University of Newcastle, New South Wales, and has consulted on two research projects in Australian schools that extended the body of research on AIW. He serves as associate editor for the international journal Teaching and Teacher Education, and has published in national and international research and practitioner journals. Currently, he provides professional development as an AIW coach in Wisconsin and Georgia.

Along with colleagues Fred Newmann and Dana Carmichael, Bruce recently published a companion book to this volume, Authentic Intellectual Work: Improving Teaching for Rigorous Learning (Corwin, 2015).

Improving Rigor in Our Classrooms
By John Barell
Since 1996 and the publication of Fred Newmann’s AUTHENTIC ACHIEVEMENT some of us have a well-grounded in theory and research foundation for seeking out those educators who are challenging all students to think productively through more open-ended complex problematic situations, using all intellectual skills required of adults in life. Definitely transcending rote learning and use of bubble tests.
Now, we have a follow-up volume by Newmann, Carmichael and King as an elaboration of this earlier volume. AUTHENTIC INTELLECTUAL WORK stresses how engagement with such complex, rigorous problems involves construction of knowledge, disciplined inquiry and action or utilitarian value beyond school. Each of these will lead to deep analysis, understanding and application beyond the classroom (as often called for by CCSS and International Baccalaureate).
Authors present useable examples from all subjects K-12 where students must figure things out on their own or collaboratively and not merely recite facts and concepts. For example, Write a persuasive letter to a potential voter encouraging her/him to vote for a certain candidate whose ideals reflect those of our Founding Fathers. Explain and elaborate.
In addition each school example is accompanied by AIW standards, such as construction of knowledge in mathematics: “The task asks students to organize, interpret, synthesize or evaluate information in addressing a mathematical theorem. . .[or in science] to construct knowledge rather than retrieving or restating scientific facts. . .” Very far from rote learning!
Penultimately, authors present evidence that students gain in academic achievement in classes that stress AIW—“students of all social backgrounds,” not merely gifted and college bound. And, they perform better on “conventional tests of basic skills and knowledge” than students in less demanding classrooms.
Rounding out their presentation are approaches to professional development and I, as one researcher, can attest to their success in one US community, where the superintendent has transformed his entire district from rote learning to AIW with remarkable results.
This volume and its predecessor (1996) form the bedrock of practice and research for all those educators looking for help in challenging students to think through complex, authentic problematic situations with rigor.

When Senmut's sculpting chisel slips from his fingers, accidentally killing a sacred dove, Egyptian priests exile the 9-year-old boy to a lifetime of hard labor in the gold mines of Nubia. Wrenched from his family, forced to endure brutal guards and unending heat, Senmut turns to the one thing he loves best -- his sculpture. Can it set him free? "The suspense never flags, and details of the period are so smoothly integrated that the action never slows, either." -- Booklist "An exciting and information-filled adventure. The details of the daily life, customs, and beliefs of the people are wonderfully revealed through the words and deeds of the characters. The story has enough excitement to capture the interest of even the most reluctant readers." -- School Library Journal

When a young sculptor in 13th-century B.C. Egypt accidentally kills a sacred dove, he is sentenced to a lifetime of hard labor in the Nubian mines. Ages 8-12. (Nov.)r

From School Library Journal
Grade 3-6. When his sculptor father is bitten by a cobra, Senmut believes that if he can carve a statue of the healer-goddess Sekhmet that will please her, she will help save Yuf. But as the boy works, he carelessly throws aside a tool, accidentally killing a dove. This thoughtless act, in the ancient Egypt Rubalcaba has re-created, means a death sentence for Senmut, unless the gods intercede on his behalf. They do, and instead of a quick death, the boy is sentenced to work in the mines, which will lead, he knows, to a slower, but no-less-sure, demise. How the protagonist escapes this fate and, by virtue of his talent and some good luck, survives to become Royal Sculptor to the Pharaoh, makes for an exciting and information-filled adventure. The details of daily life, customs, and beliefs of the people are wonderfully revealed through the words and deeds of the characters. The story has enough excitement to capture the interest of most reluctant readers. While several of the events rely on coincidence, careful plotting and foreshadowing prepare readers for some of the ensuing action. The prologue, for example, is told from the cobra's perspective and cleverly sets the stage for what follows. The places and objects are so well described that they can be easily visualized by children unfamiliar with Egyptian artifacts. A substantial glossary helps to identify and explain unfamiliar terms. A fine story for enjoyment or as curriculum support for units on ancient Egypt.?Linda Greengrass, Bank Street College Library, New York City

From Booklist
Gr. 3^-6. When his sculptor father is bitten by a cobra, Senmut carves a statue of Sekhmet, hoping to appease this goddess of illness and healing. Ironically, in his haste he accidentally kills a dove, a capital offense in thirteenth-century-B.C. Egypt, the setting of this fast-paced historical novel. Although the boy's life is spared, he is exiled to toil in the gold mines of Nubia, a life that is literally worse than death. His inherited artistic talent and--perhaps--divine intervention provide a surprising but plausible ending. Since there is enough plot here for a novel much longer than this slender adventure, some of its scenes seem truncated. However, the suspense never flags, and details of the period are so smoothly integrated that the action never slows, either. An appended glossary is useful and informative. Michael Cart

A little dark but not bad
By Will Riddle
I am a really picky homeschooler, and I have been challenged to find wholesome books on Ancient Egypt this year. I approached "A Place in the Sun" with some hesitancy because I was very disappointed with "Maia of Thebes" and some of the other literature often recommended in the homeschooling catalogs I have. Either the recommendations are too dark and spooky, or too liberal and feminist. I have young boys, so I was looking for something that was not too challenging either. This is easier than "Cat of Bubastes" for example.

"Place in the Sun" worked for us ok. I wish it had been a little better---more uplifting tone, maybe, or not quite as stop-start in the pace---but I read it aloud to my 7 and 8 year olds, and they liked it all right. I think they sensed that a typical story on Egypt is not going to be light and lively. There's slavery in the story, punishment, and hardship. But the story works well for boys because the main character is a boy around that age, who has feelings a lot like theirs even though the setting is thousands of years ago. My kids are bright but needed a lot of interpretation of what was going on, though, so I'm glad it was a read aloud. If they had read it silently (which they could have because the vocabulary and length wasn't that challenging), I think most of it would have gone over their heads. They needed help with the culture gap (i.e. names of gods/goddesses, the way the temple and justice system worked, the sociology of cursing/pledges that went on) but they also needed help with literary devices (i.e. foreshadowing, time jumps, some symbols here and there). They got it, though.

Having read Rubalcalba's other non-fiction book on Egypt, I know she knows what she's talking about. She seems to have first hand knowledge of the civilization and I think my boys walked away knowing what living in ancient Egypt as a boy would have really been like. But as thankful as I am for that, it's a totally secular book with little to really make it a proactive good read. There's not even a moral really. I wouldn't seek it out, I guess... I would just use it if you needed it to fill a niche, like I did.

Couldn't stop reading this book.

A great read with lots of emotion. This book gave me a really good feeling of ancient Egypt and made me feel like I was there. I felt like I could have been Senmut because he was a boy my age and seemed to be like me. I learned lots about Egypt while enjoying the characters and setting.

Starve Volume 1, by Brian Wood

Once the world's most famous chef, Gavin Cruikshank's been in a self-imposed exile for years. His little foodie television program has since evolved into STARVE, an arena sport that pits chef against chef for the pleasure of their super-rich patrons. It's a stain on a once-noble profession, and Chef Gavin is ready to go to war to stop it. Two things stand in his way: his arch rival Roman Algiers, and his adult daughter Angie, who probably just wants her dad back and acting normal.

From Publishers Weekly
In the first two pages of this story, Gavin Cruikshank appears to be little more than a narcotics-fueled trainwreck. Readers soon learn, however, that the drugs are just his escape. His real passion is Starve, a reality cooking show of his own making that, in the words of Emeril Lagasse, cranks things up a notch—by having competitor chefs kill live animals or engage in close-quarters hand-to-hand fighting. Gavin's ex-wife, Greer, furious that Gavin concealed his homosexuality from her for years, now has control of Starve, but he's about to make his long-awaited reappearance on the show. Wood (DMZ), Zezelj (El Diablo), and Stewart (The Massive) have put together an intense, driven story that's carried by the realism of the character interactions. This is a must-read for those who love a pinch of reality cooking, a dash of evisceration, and a liberal dose of strong graphic storytelling. (Jan.)\n

Another cutting edge Brian Wood title
By Alt
Brian Wood is always cutting edge. Each title he writes is wildly different from the last. Starve is my new Brian Wood favorite. I’ve never read anything quite like it.

Starve takes place in a near future where global warming has left a chunk of the East Coast underwater and the Customs service has been privatized. Reality TV has been taken to a new level by Gavin Cruikshank, a chef whose television show, “Starved,” made him a celebrity. Then Cruikshank dropped out, leaving behind an angry wife and a disappointed daughter. Cruikshank’s wife is angry in part because she only belatedly learned that her husband is gay.

As the story opens, Cruikshank has gone native in Southeast Asia. His fun ends when the network insists he fulfill his contract by filming 8 more episodes. Cruikshank is pleased to learn that the show is now worth quite a bit of money, but displeased to discover that in his absence, his wife had him declared legally dead and now owns the rights to the show.

The celebrity chef challenges on Starve are more … challenging … than those offered by typical reality TV shows. And more dangerous, as Cruikshank learns when he returns to his show, which is now in the hands of a rival chef.

There’s always something deeper going on than the surface layer of the story that Brian Wood tells. Starve is about the gap between the rich and the poor. It’s about the over-consumption of resources by the privileged. It’s about the waste and excess and greed that kills the environment and assures that the poor will continue to starve. It’s about the difference between pride in doing something well and the desire to be recognized for doing something well.

And it’s about the love of food. Really good food, well-prepared.

And it’s about a father’s love of his daughter, and how that love demands that he get back in the game and make amends.

Good stuff. Really good. And the edgy, ragged, angular art is perfect for the show’s noir feel. So is the coloring, dominated by black and red.

Familiar elements in exciting, bloody setting
By Johanna Draper Carlson
Starve is an intriguing blend of food culture and science fiction layered with comment on the life of the privileged and a redemption story. In the near future, the economy has collapsed, and everything has been privatized. The distinction between rich and poor is greater than ever.

Gavin Cruikshank has run away from being a celebrity chef after creating Starve, a cooking competition show. The series, now dedicated to ridiculous excess, is a huge success, and he’s been living off the profits. Although wealthy, he’s been slumming, but now, the network demands he come back to fulfill his contract. He wants to leave it all behind, but he can’t get the resources to do so without reentering the world that he despises.

Much of the comic is Gavin’s internal monologue, juicy description of what he’s thinking while he’s eating or cooking. He’s the kind of self-centered, perpetually drunk jerk people tolerate because he’s just so talented. Only everyone here hates him, particularly his not-quite-ex-wife who resents him not being honest about his homosexuality and his rival, Roman Algiers, who now runs the show.

He’s also got a daughter on the verge of adulthood whom he hasn’t seen in years and wants to reconnect with. This is all part of a classic structure, a story we’ve seen many times before, but the blood on the page — in more ways than one, as live animals are butchered, but also the portrayal of very raw emotions — is addictive in an unclean way. The setting allows for exaggerated actions that somehow seem plausible in this dog-eat-dog world. I feel nervous about enjoying this read, as though it should be forbidden. But then there’s a delicious dish described, and different wants take precedence.

The art is dirty and edgy, much like the events on the show within the story, where contestants are asked to steal a delicacy or serve dog or literally fight their way through competing chefs in another kitchen. The text and the images may only slightly be related to each other, creating meaning through layering or contrast. The art is often monochrome, everything colored in shades of one hue, creating more of an atmosphere than a detailed image to pour over. It’s about the moment, with the artists drawing the eye skillfully to punch the emotion to the reader.

Brian Wood, Danijel Zezelj, and Dave Stewart don’t credit who’s doing what, a contrast to the chef-as-star aesthetic they’re portraying. As Gavin struggles to win, although he doesn’t want to but feels he has to, everyone cheats. There’s a layer of contempt over everything — the people who want to eat delicacies, the mass that have made a mean show a success, the participants and their base motivations, the way the competition is slanted. There are no heroes in this book, although Gavin, with his posturing and eff-you attitude, will be seen as an admirable antihero by some.

Starve collects the first five issues of the series. (The publisher provided an advance digital review copy. Review originally posted at ComicsWorthReading.com.)

Starved
By Silly Billy
Gavin was a famous chef who starred on his own TV show, Starved. Then he fell off the face of the planet after getting divorced and indulging in drugs. Once he runs out of money, he is called back to the show to finish 8 more episodes and get paid.

I was surprised that I liked this comic so much. The artwork is dark, and not really my style, but it fit the story line and I ended up liking it. I can't help but root for Gavin, even though he walked out on his family and turned to drugs in a far off country. His ex-wife hates him (for abandoning their daughter and for divorcing her after admitting he was gay the whole time), but he is apparently a talented chef and is holding his own on the show. The idea for the cooking show is interesting. It is set in the near future, where certain foods have become so rare that only the super-rich can afford to eat it. This results in the chefs using illegal means to obtain the food, and it is displayed on television for everyone to see.

My only problem is that I don't really like the daughter--she is weirdly clingy towards the dad who left when she was 14.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to Volume 2 to see what new challenges are in store on the show, as well as to see what happens with Gavin's ex-wife, daughter, and assistant.

I received an ebook copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
