A real page-turner!

This one grabs you from the start. The oldest child taken from her family (as custom requires) to train to defend her people in a mysterious guard. She is picked out of the line by the leader to be his personal trainee even though his job has always made him exempt from having a trainee. Don't you just love it! My only objection is the ending. I went back and reread it several times to try to understand. It seems to me that a sequel would have been in order. There was a major skirmish with the enemy coming up, and the hero and heroine were trying to find a way to buck the system and be together. I would have liked more from these characters.

I am currently rereading this novel for the nth time. I've lost count. This book is my most treasured, it rocks. Senea and Vayhawk are identifiable characters, and some of the most three-dimensionally written I've seen. With their struggle with Sky, Yunab, and the Ja'sid power the warrior-style novel never had it written so good. In a sweeping story of magic, war, and unlikely love and hate, this book ranks at the top. While I'm afraid it is *sob* currently out of print, may you all be so lucky as to find a copy. You'll cherish it as much as I.

Captivating

From the very beginning this book just takes hold of you and never lets go. I found myself at tears when I first read the book because it was so beautiful and I had to read it a second time. I felt that I was right there with Vayhawk and Senea every step of the way through it all. It's a unique fantasy unlike anything I've ever read before and I highly recommend it to anyone who is into fantasy or just wants to read a romantic and action filled story.

Excellent book. Easy to read; hard to put down

'Once a Warrior King' is an
excellent book. Written by Terry Turner using the pen name David Donovan.
I served on MACV Advisory Team 88 in Ben Tre, Kein Hoa Province, IV Corps, Sept. '68 - Aug. '69.
(That was where 'We had to destroy the town in order to save it.'
A dumb statement which was not true. Some buildings were damaged but were quickly repaired.)
I was fortunate to be at Province headquarers where we were able to live in a decent manner. By comparision, the MAT and District team where Terry Turner served, near the Cambodian border, had very little personal and US military support. It is obvious to me, as a former MACV officer, that the book 'Once A Warrior King' could have only been written by somemone who was actually there. The fact that T. Turner used a pen name is OK. Many of the names in the book were changed for reasons of privacy.

decent but not definitive

This is a decent but far from 'flawless' biography. The most serious flaw is that it hardly mentions the man who wrote and produced most of her hits -John Farrar. Olivia is a great singer with a beautiful voice but her career would never have been the phenomenon it was without his great songs and tasteful understated production. Another flaw is that it only presents Bruce Welch's version of their break-up making it seem as if she abandoned him for no reason at all. Another problem is that once it reaches Grease it forgets her music and focuses only on her movie career even though she still recorded great albums. Hopefully someone will rectify these matters and write a more definitive story about my favorite female singer.

If You Only Want One Piano Solo Sngbook of Cole Porter's Cassic Songs Ths Is It.

This collection of arrangements of Cole Porter's music stands out far above any other collection of his music that I own or have seen and there are many out there. It contains a fairly extensive representation of his work, 22 songs in all, covering most of his best known tunes. The arrangements are lush and full sounding but not overly complicated. If your piano playing skills are anywhere in the intermediate range than you'll probably be able to easily bring these arrangements to life. If you're skills are somewhere in the early intermediate stage it may just take you a bit longer to learn them. Compared to most of the other volumes in "Jazz Piano Series" these arrangements are easier but they still sound great. I'm very pleased to have this collection.

Cole's Hits: Familiar and Fun

Don't know about you, but sometimes I just need a change. This book includes so many "classics" that it is fun to play. I own many versions of these songs, some are bare bones and some are intricate arrangements. Those included here are somewhere in the middle. Nice to have a collection at hand for a nice sound, and variety of style. I'm enjoying it!

Doug Marschke is an engineering graduate from the University of Michigan currently a principal partner at Proteus Networks. He is JNCIE-ER #3, JNCIE-M #41 and JNCIS-FW, JNCIA certified. He is a writer of various Juniper certification exams and co-writer of the JNCIE Enterprise Exam. He has also authored the JUNOS Enterprise Routing book, and coming in 2009, JUNOS Enterprise Switching. Doug currently spends his time working with both service providers and enterprises to optimize their IP networks for better performance, cost and reliability. He has spent the last 6 month working on a next generation government satellite network. He also flies around the world and back sharing his knowledge in a variety of training classes and seminars with topics ranging from troubleshooting, design and certification preparation. The authors did a brilliant job in defining clearly what is SDN. The fog has cleared in my head on the relationship between cloud, virtualization, SDN, OpenFlow and OpenStack. A lot of the buzz words out in the industry are clearly explained through example in this book. An excellent introductory into the fundamentals of SDN. I am eagerly waiting for volume 2! I will be the first person to purchase the volume 2 :) . Thumbs up!

All Network Engineers Aboard!

This book starts off with a very brief, but concise depiction of why we have a data plane, and control plane. And even more so, it explains the reason how all these different convergence addons (LISP, BFD, etc) evolved. Then it gets to why SDN would alleviate all of that, plus vendor-specific knowledge about implementation of networking protocols, etc. I am just in the middle of the 3rd chapter, and I must say, I couldn't have become interested in SDN at a better time (except for day one, wink). But now that it has evolved, and is on the forefront, I see this as another "disruption" in the field of networking. So as a network engineer, i'm climbing aboard now!

Steve Chappell's Advanced Timber Framing: Joinery, Design & Construction of Compound Hip & Valley Timber frame Roof Systems is the most detailed and comprehensive book available on how to layout and cut mortise and tenon joinery for complex roofs. But this book is invaluable to any craftsman-builder in a number of other ways as well.

It includes an in-depth review of the history of timber framing, including insights into the evolution of joinery, building form and design from ancient times to the present. Inherent in this development was an understanding by ancient builders of proportion and geometry in both the natural and man-made environments, and Chappell carries these lessons forward to apply them to modern timber roofs.

Whereas all of this drawing can now be done by computer, the traditional training of the craftsman includes learning to draw it by hand, thus increasing the artistic abilities and visualization skills of the craftsman. This ability to see the roof framing in one s mind s eye enables the problem-solving ability of the builder, and offers a wider variety of possible solutions to a problem, including the use of naturally curved or free-form materials. The author is able to successfully extend these concepts to musical analogies as well, which have been a big influence on his work over the years.

The techniques Chappell has developed and presents here are applicable to other building challenges that require three-dimensional visualization - stairs, furniture and boats, for example. Anyone faced with a problem that involves a structure being build at varying angles through space (not just square, plumb and level) will find many useful tools here.

The layout of mortised and tenoned joinery in heavy timber is especially challenging and presented here in a clear and methodic manner. The many photos alone are valuable to see potential solutions to a myriad of compound roof problems (especially valley systems) a framer might encounter in their career. There is a vocabulary of compound joinery that shows many of the ways roof timbers can come together, and it s hard to imagine a junction that isn t shown here.

About the Author
Steve Chappell has been building, teaching and writing about timber framing and traditional building for more than 35 years. He is an early pioneer of the timber framing revival, and one of the co-founders of the Timber Framers Guild in 1984. As the founder and director of Fox Maple School of Traditional Building in 1983, Chappell has taught many hundreds of students the finer aspects of timber framing, and has been a prominent and enthusiastic advocate of traditional timber framing and natural building systems. As the publisher and editor of Joiners' Quarterly for many years, Chappell has written extensively on the subject of traditional building, and is also the author of the book, A Timber Framers Workshop.

Clear, thorough and inspiring

In this book, Chappell secures and solidifies your interest in enhancing your timberframing projects to include more intricate and advanced frame elements by so tastefully showing the history and potential of compound joinery. He also shows you that it's within your reach. The details are meticulously presented with care and attention to detail any practitioner would appreciate. To be fair, this is not a subject for the faint of geometric heart, and many will find it an enjoyable challenge to wrap their head around all three dimensions of the topic, but with this reference, it is well within range. Aside from his hands-on workshops (which I recommend) I cannot imagine a better way to present this subject, than the book he has put together. Read, be inspired, design and cut.....with confidence.

Whether it be learning the craft yourself or having a frame crafted for you, this book will excite your interest and get you moving forward with incorporating the craft into your life. Technically unsound, but still valuable

This book contains way too many technical inaccuracies.
About half the book addresses technical issues (basics, camera modes, natural light, artificial light, post-processing [unread]), it is a shame that these chapters are riddled with so many mistakes, some minor and some huge. And when there are no mistakes, technicals aspects are sometimes poorly explained. Begginners reading this book will be confused, more advanced photographers will cringe.

Dujardin is a talented artist with a good eye for composition, styling, colors and lighting, but is sadly lacking on the technical side. She compensates for this with her own artistic sense, but alas she tries to explain photography in technical terms and fails.
She should have either steered away from technical discussions, or have those chapters written (or at least proof-read) by a more technically competent photographer. I would not recommend this book (in the present edition) to someone starting out. Or perhaps I'd tear the first half off and attach some better resources to it (ie : Understanding Exposure for basics, and Strobist.com for artifical light)

Some examples of inaccuracies :

Minor :
- some captions not matching the pictures (as in page 54, caption says "soft light" but it is hard and undiffused as described in the text)
- on p.31 the phrase "these pears were shot with a wide aperture and shallow depht of field" might lead a begginner to think these are two distinct settings.

Not so minor :
- on p.81 calling a speedlight on the camera's hot shoe an "off-camera flash" (even if you bounce the light)
- on p.73 the setup shot and description are confusing. Text seems to indicate the light goes through the umbrella, bounces on the ceiling and back at the subject, but looking at the setup it seems as if most of the light hitting the food is the light bounced from the umbrella, not the ceiling.

Huge :
- on p.60 "the light [...] was very strong, even though it was diffused, and this created a shallow depht of field" : DoF does not depend on the amount or type of light.
- on p.86 "The second bounce further further increased the amount of light[...] and this helped to create a more pleasing depht of field" : same as above.

I haven't read the less technical chapters and believe (hope) that I might yet learn something valuable from this book, but I find the above issues extremely distracting.

EDIT : I have now finished reading the book. While I stand by my previous criticism, the book does fulfill its main objectives. It provides some very usefull tips for food photography, especially in the styling department (props, colors, ...) and with its beautiful pictures, it is also inspiring (both photographically and for cooking) Perhaps the "tips" could be more clearly presented (lists ?) rather than mentionned conversationnaly in the text but that is of minor importance.
I've upgraded my initial rating from 2 stars to 3.

Wanted to love it.....

I am an avid consumer of food blogs. I read about 25 food blogs religiously and see a lot of food photography. More and more, food blogs are becoming uniform, with the same distressed-wood platforms and soft-light setups and props that suggest a rustic country kitchen turning out classic dishes for a group of close friends and family gathered around a centuries-old table used by generations past. In short, everyone is becoming Helene Dujardin. The thing is that I'm sure her photography was once really groundbreaking for its clean images and exact propping. But now it seems same-old, same-old. Anyway, I got this book because I thought, at the very least, it would give me a starting point to learn how to create photographs that everyone likes and then work from there to find my own voice. Except, to me, this book is more a narrative on what it's like to be a food photographer and not any kind of practical instruction on how to be one. Sure, Dujardin talks about lighting setups and camera angles and composition, but there's no meat here. It's mostly fluff, not readily applicable to a beginner's abilities and understanding of photography, food styling and composition. That said, it's a nice read, has beautiful photos (if you can get past the sense that every last cocoa nib has been placed precisely with tweezers....) and has some vague information about equipment and general camera settings that have worked for Dujardin. Probably better as a pleasure read for some information about the life and work of a successful food photographer than it is an instruction manual.

If you are serious about Food Photography, this book is a must have

I opened the book to read it on Sunday and finished reading by Tuesday! Neither because I know most of the book contents, nor the book has no contents except some gorgeous photos by the author! The book has almost 260 pages of useful information! But, because the book is written in such a beautiful style. As if someone is whispering in your ears. Also the information flow very smoothly and free of clutter of technical stuff although the book covers most of food photography aspects.

At the beginning I ignored and skipped the parts that talk about exposure, Aperture and Shutter speed and went directly to the parts of interests. After reading one chapter of those, I went back to the beginning of the book and read it from first page to the last. Even I read the information I already know. I don't know why but I felt inspired.

The author is a French came to USA in 90s and worked in several restaurant before she became the master chief of pastry for a French restaurant.

At the beginning she was photographing the pastry she make for the other colleague to make the same when she goes for vacation. In 2006 she left the restaurant job and started her award winning blog [...] and devoted her time in cooking , designing and photographing food.

Soon she progressed and became a professional food photographer and her photos published in national magazines such as Elle Magazine, Forbes Magazine and others

In the first chapter: a talk about the light in general and the importance of it to make a photo and some basics about how to deal with light and find it.

Second chapter is devoted for the talk about photography basics like Exposure variables and how to balance. Then a talk about light and controlling the white balance. At the last, a talk about the camera modes.

Third chapter is for the natural light and the characteristics of softness and hardness and how to control that using available tools. Then a talk about the direction of light and applying that in food photography.

In the fourth chapter: here where the artificial lights enter into the picture. A talk about equipment used as lights Scrim panel and some setting for them. Then a talk about the popup flash and how to utilize it in food photography. Then a little talk about triggers followed by a talk about soft boxes and their uses.

Fifth Chapter: Composition in food photography, this is where we start getting in to food photography business. A talk about where to put your subject - the hero - and centered subject in food photography. Then a little talk about the famous Rule of Thirds! Followed by a talk about the focus and its importance to make your subject pop. Then the importance of depth of field and its importance as every subject requires an appropriate depth of field. At the last of this chapter a talk about a very importance subject which is perspective and camera angle.

Chapter six is devoted for the preparation of the place and plate! The place you take photo at has to have some important features that make food photography a little easier safer and more fun. Also the plate has to be indicative of the food you are photographing all this along with making the scene and hero/props relation together with discussion about surfaces (backgrounds) and utilizing food height and color contrast are discussed in this chapter that ends with an important advise to shoot tethered . very important chapter and full of valuable information.

Chapter seven: a talk about food types and styling them. It covers most of the food groups like herbs and spices, pastries and nuts, fruits and vegetables, soups, fish, meat, fries and pasta, burgers and sandwiches, breakfasts and pastries. Also suits like cakes, pies, ice creams and frozen suits. Cold and hot beverages. The chapter ends with a discussion about styling kit and tools used.

Chapter eight - the last chapter of the book is for after photography related like downloading your photos from camera to your computer and the required equipment. then a discussion about copyrighting/watermarking your photos. Followed by discussion about post processing software available and the free ones of them. And finally sharing your photos in the web and printing.

The book has a section of appendixes that includes: A glossary, B equipment guide and C resources and where to get more information in this subject.

For me, the book is 100/100 and deserves all pennies paid and each minute spent with it.

The book is missing the part of post processing, but that is not so important to me. If you understand and apply the information in this book in your shoot, you will make photos that need no post processing or minimal amount of processing.
