Good recital pieces

This is a good selection of solo pieces for beginning piano students. Level of this book is appropriate for students who are in about a level 2 method book (such as Piano Adventures.) It would be a little too difficult for primary level students. Some of the pieces are a little simpler than others and would work for level one students. It was used in the Federated Music Club as a Primary 2 level piece. My students have enjoyed the songs in this book.

Truly Inspiring book!!

This book is not just a "feel good" book with stories to make you smile, it is full of TRUE life stories about how God works in people's lives to bring glory to Him.

There was one story that should pique anyone's interest about life and God's power to heal. In this story, the lady's name is Noelle and she was living out a generational curse of deafness that had started generations earlier. As soon as she turned 20 years old, she started losing her hearing, and this was quite an adjustment for someone who loved music! At the age of 50, God changed all of that. She went to a song service expecting great things, and God came through in a big way -- she could hear again!!

This reminds me of the story in the Bible of the 10 lepers who were healed and the ONE that had to go and tell EVERYONE what God had done for him.

This book will bring you peace and happiness and help you to remember that when God moves in your life, YOU WILL KNOW IT. It will also inspire you to want Him to move in your life and to remember to ask Him to and to expect great results! That is how I felt when I read this book. :)

Real Life Real Miracles - Real Good

I had the privilege of receiving a free copy of Real Life Real Miracles by James L. Garlow & Keith Wall from Bethany House to review. It is a book filled with over thirty short stories about every day people and the amazing miracles that happened to them.

It starts with the story of a passenger on United Flight 811 in 1989. If you remember, it took off from Honolulu and had a large section of the plane rip off. Her story is amazing, but so many other stories in the book touched me in many ways. Some of them have to do with tumors disappearing or people being pronounced dead and then brought back to life. If there is someone in your life who is going through some tough times right now, I know book could bring some peace to them.

Encouraging and faith building

Do you ever wonder about those little "coincidences" that happen in your life? Maybe you were caught in a traffic jam because you left the house late, only to find out later that you missed a major accident that could've involved you if you had left on time. Maybe you weren't sure how you were going to pay the bills last month, only to receive a mysterious check in the mail for the exact amount you needed. Things like this happen to people every day. The question is, are they merely coincidences or are they perhaps something more, part of a greater design for your life?

In Real Life, Real Miracles: True Stories That Will Help You Believe, the answer to this question becomes painstakingly clear. Miracles do still happen today. Join Dr. Jim Garlow, "senior pastor of Skyline Church in San Diego", and "publishing veteran", Keith Wall as they share the accounts of thirty extraordinary things that happened to thirty ordinary people.

Synopsis...

Each true story in this book describes normal occurrences such as illnesses, financial troubles, or traffic accidents. As you read each story, however, amazing things begin to unfold--a man pronounced dead takes another breath, a woman finds the diamond she lost in a motorcycle wreck, the name of God (YHWH) gives hope when all seems lost. The deeper into this book you delve, the stronger your faith and belief will become that good old-fashioned miracles are still being performed today, and the only One who deserves the glory is our great and awesome Creator.

Why I liked it...

I always enjoy hearing stories about how miracles have strengthened a person's faith in God. I love how the outcome of certain circumstances cause you to look nowhere but up. There are just some things that can only be explained by believing that God's hand was there. Real Life, Real Miracles reminded me of just how involved God is in the lives of the children He loves.

What I didn't like...

Some of the retellings were a little lengthy and dry. I feel the stories would've been more powerful if they had been told from a first person perspective.

Recommendation...

I would recommend this book to others who enjoy reading about the power of God and the difference it has made in the lives of others. If you need a reminder of just how amazing God is, if you need a little extra dose of faith, or if you're just looking for an easy, relaxing read, this book is for you.

Fresh take

This is a beautiful, beautiful book. I’m generally not a fan of urbane vampires, instead preferring killing machines a la 30 Days of Night or Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan’s The Strain Trilogy. But Jamieson does a brilliant job of capturing a world where the vampires are only urbane because they dominate a pretty much entirely subjugated population. And this book is as much a heart-rending coming-of-age story as it is a tale of the post-apocalypse. Day Boy Mark’s tribulations will ring bells for anyone who has struggled to find their place in the world.

“It’s bitter cold and a sky so clear that the stars burn. Breath streams from us, and no matter that we’re dressed warm, it’s still a shock, like jumping into water that’s colder than you expected. The moon’s a sliver in the sky, but everything is so clear. Land looms around us blue and hulking, drawing in and receding, and you suddenly get a sense of how big everything is and how little you are, but it’s still wonderful, because small and brief you’re still here and breathing plumes in the dark: defiant and proud. And there is no one more defiant than us.”

Day Boy is the first stand-alone novel by teacher, bookseller and prize-winning Australian author of science fiction and fantasy, Trent Jamieson. Mark is a Day Boy. He has been in the service (and under the patronage) of his Master, Dain, since he was small. From the accounts of the other Day Boys in the town, Mark knows he is fortunate to be with Dain. His Master is fair, looks out for his welfare and teaches him well. In return, Mark looks after his Master’s needs, watches over Dain when he is most vulnerable and tries (often unsuccessfully) to win his Master’s esteem.

His time as a Day Boy is coming to an end, and, while his predecessor, Dav, has followed the path to himself becoming a Master, Mark is fairly certain his own transgressions will preclude this destiny. But he has been offered a position locally, and is not dissatisfied to stay in Midfield, this town to the east of the City in the Shadow of the Mountains, especially if the lovely Anne stays. However, the tenuous peace between the Masters and the townsfolk is under threat, the Hunters outside the town are an ever-present danger, and Mark’s first trip to the City almost ends in disaster.

Jamieson has set his story in a (possibly post-apocalyptic) future Australia where Masters exist in a symbiotic relationship with the human population, protecting them from Monsters in exchange for blood feeds and the service of a Day Boy. Jamieson builds his world gradually and leaves parts of it (perhaps purposefully) vague: there is plenty of scope for a sequel. His characters are believable and their dialogue is a cross between contemporary Australian and eighteenth century English. He gives some of his characters words of wisdom: “Truths said or not are still true”.

Mark develops and matures over the course of the story, and his narrative voice is both superbly descriptive and succinct: “Rob spits at the constable’s feet and turns nice and slow, and I can see that Mick is battling with the urge to hit him. Hard. But sense prevails, I guess, or fear, which is just another sort of sense. I can almost respect that. Strike an auditor and you might as well strike Death herself”. Jamieson gives the reader beautiful prose and a very original plot, making for an excellent read.

I've been a fan of Trent Jamieson for a long time, but even then I was dubious about this book. A vampire story. I'm so over vampire stories. But Jamieson has created something truly brilliant here. The writing is beautiful and powerful, an assurance of voice that's rare and hard to maintain, but he nails it. The mythology of the new world, post-some kind of apocalypse that's never fully explained, is rich and compelling. I have one question that still snags - why are there no female masters? Maybe I'll have to ask Trent one day. But it's not a question that in any way detracts from the book. I loved this and consumed in no time at all. Highly recommended!

About the Author

The late Robert C. Solomon was Quincy Lee Centennial Professor of Business and Philosophy and Distinguished Teaching Professor at the University of Texas at Austin. A past president of the International Society for Research on Emotions, he was the author of more than forty books and did several video and audio "Superstar Teacher" courses for the Teaching Company.

Background: Robert Solomon, University of Texas, Austin, philosopher in the Anglo-American method and Continental leanings, re-introduced "emotions" or "the passions" into the vocabulary of the theories of mind, particularly with his seminal (and substantially revised) "The Passions: Emotions and Meanings of Life" (1976/1993). He has since written extensively on this subject, including his evolving essays in "Not Passion's Slave: Emotions and Choice" and his superb "Love: Emotion, Myth, and Metaphor." His own "philosophy" that borrows heavily from Continental Thought is "The Joy of Philosophy" which is a true joy to read, re-introducing those topics that are most meaningful in our daily lives (not connotative/denotative, but meaningful).

As has been a theme throughout all his writings, our emotions are not a subordinate, but the dominant, feature of our mental lives. Plato and Christianity clearly depreciated the West's understanding and value of these "things" we call variously emotions, passions, feelings, etc. Not until Hume did the passions receive the attention they deserved, only to fall into obscurity again with positivism, analyticity, and ideologies. Solomon resurrected them in the 1970s, and has awakened others (e.g., de Souza, Nussbaum, Davidson, et alia) to an energized interest in these curious "things." Alas, even psychology (yes, psychology) has re-awakened itself to these "oddities" they too had marginalized.

This Book: If one is already acquainted with Solomon's other writings, especially those mentioned above, the present one, "True to Our Feelings," will not offer any revelatory insights. If, however, one is new to Solomon, this book is an excellent place to begin one's inquiry into this long-ignored subject, aided by Solomon's articulate writing, keen insights, and devotion to assuring the West that life does have "meanings," those meanings locked-away as "brutish" and "inhuman" by Christianity and others, and the locus of those meanings is indeed in our emotional lives, not in our ratiocinative ones.

Using a rhetorical question Solomon posed in "The Passions," he asks the reader to recall from memory the most-meaningful memories, and demonstrates that in each and every instance those meaningful experiences and memories were achieved through our emotions. But before dumping our ratiocinative faculties for our more hedonistic emotions in order to make life all that more meaningful, Solomon insists that the very bifurcation of ratiocinative/appetitive is solely conceptual, not actual. The West's Mistake was to make the conceptual bifurcation actual, and thus deprive humans of their appetitive faculties as "sub-human." So, he's not articulating an either/or dichotomy as has been the dominant paradigm for millennia, he's conjoining them as they properly belong.

Lest one think Solomon's endeavor is another philosophical pursuit in obscurantism, I assure the reader he's anything but obscure. If any philosopher has touched "relevance" more aptly and assuredly, it's because Solomon has opened the door wide to let all them in. That said, however, it must be remembered that Solomon is a philosopher and these writings, including the present one, are philosophical in their bearing (not biological, as, for example, in evolutionary biology and psychology). The two disciplines are talking the same talk, they're just approaching the same subject from different angles, and both, not either one, are fruitful endeavors in that they mutually-enhance each other's insights and studies.

Thus, the present book is an excellent survey of his own thoughts and how they too have evolved as knowledge of these "things" we variously call emotions, passions, and feeling retake the stage. It also complements all the research in evolutionary biology and evolutionary psychology (e.g., Cosmides, Tooby, Ridley, Pinker, et alia). And, as one's esteem in these curious "things" called emotions has been restored, I heartily recommend reading his "Love: Emotion, Myth, and Metaphor" (if not all of his other works). No Theory of Mind is even half competent if it ignores the most prominent feature of all, viz., emotions.

The Stoics embraced apathethia (apathy) and the Epicureans embraced ataraxia (unperturbility) as "responses" to emotions (see, Nussbaum's "Therapy of Desire" for a great survey of these schools and their approaches to our emotional lives). Saint Paul had little positive to say about emotions, but even he embraced (in a moment of sinful weakness, perhaps) "love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control" (Gal. 5:22), so even Christians seem to have protested against emotions too much, too. Solomon has a different approach: embrace our emotional lives, because they fill us with all our most important meanings. And if the emotions of "love" (romantic, parental, universal) don't speak to the obviousness of that observation, then Solomon won't speak to that individual, either. But don't take that appraisal too proudly (since pride is also an emotion, as are hate, anger, jealousy, etc.) If Nature has endowed the human species with such a rich armamentarium of emotions, why are religion, philosophy, and even psychology repressing the very nature of our constitutions?

Hopefully, one will understand why I recommend this book, indeed many of Solomon's books, very highly.

Very good book

This book seems to follow a lecture series that Dr. Solomon does. It's an interesting book from a philosophers perspective. Dr. Solomon refers to philosophers but also current research into emotions. The style of his writing is informal and he never talks down to his reader. Sadly, Dr. Solomon passed away. His style is engaging and informative. Although Dr. Solomon claims emotions are intelligent he does not mean in the way Daniel Goldman does in his book Emotional Intelligence. Dr. Solomon's theory is that emotions are engagements with the world. Emotions can tell you alot about yourself and how you view the world.

Codifies the intuitive notion that emotions are not just feelings which we have no control over but that there is intelligence to them which can help guide and direct us to better decisions and a more rewarding life. This book helps to clarify our sometimes whimsical inclinations so that we understand them better and understand ourselves better. A very interesting and helpful book to improve our knowledge. I liked it.

Navigating the transition to leadership

Introspection and self-reflection can help you identify your current strengths and leadership style, but your current way of thinking about your job and yourself is exactly what is keeping you from stepping up, according to Herminia Ibarra in this book. You will need to change your mind-set, and in order to do that you need to start by acting like a leader, and then learn how to think like a leader.

The three key elements of this transition to leadership, which the author describes as the outsight principle, becoming a leader from the outside in, are:

• Redefine your job, which involves shifting from driving results yourself to providing strategic direction for others
• Network across and out, which involves building professional relationships with key people outside your own functional group
• Be more playful with yourself, which involves changing your leadership style and how you see yourself and others see you, so that you become a good fit for your new leadership role

In my opinion this book is potentially very helpful for those who are navigating the very awkward transition from a position in which success requires personal technical competence to a position in which success requires co-ordinating and maximising the output produced by others. You can read books and attend classes on how to become a leader, but theoretical input does not really prepare you for the full force of the difficulties you will encounter. You have to start acting like a leader before you can truly become one.

In her new book Herminia Ibarra addresses an important fallacy in literature on leadership that looks at self-selected groups of leaders and then tries to deduce how they got there. Rather, she encourages us to look for guidance for our personal leadership journeys, making this book an audacious invitation to act first and introspect after. To support her argument, she reveals recent research that encourages exploration, trying and testing different leadership styles. Her insights on the outsight - capacity to spot new opportunities outside our usual environment - are particularly refreshing and action-provoking. Finally, Ibarra shows that becoming a leader is not an event but a process with its kinks and curves - and this book is an extraordinary companion throughout it.

Best leadership book I've bought

I don't often write reviews, but after finishing Chapter 2 of this book, I realized I just had 2 epiphanies, 2 chapters deep. Unheard of for me. So far, this book has made me realize that I need to look around me and think objectively about myself to start acting and thinking like a leader. Not only a leader, but a person in society. A leader in society. I have sticky notes littering the pages and am constantly thinking about ways I can use what Ibarra is saying in the text to act on improving my relationships (professional and personal) and work to be the best leader I can be - without boxing myself into a stereotype. I recommend this book to anyone who is wanting to improve themselves, both professionally and personally. So glad I bought this book.

About the Author
Dr Geoffrey Davies is a Senior Fellow in the Research School of Earth Sciences at the Australian National University. He is an internationally honoured geophysicist who has been at the forefront of mantle convection studies for over three decades. He is also the author of the successful graduate textbook Dynamic Earth: Plates, Plumes and Mantle Convection (Cambridge University Press, 1999), and over 100 scientific papers. He has been at the forefront of attempts to reconcile mantle geochemistry with mantle dynamics, and in exploring the implications for the thermal and tectonic evolution of the Earth. Dr Davies was elected Fellow of the American Geophysical Union in 1990, and awarded the inaugural Augustus Love medal in geodynamics in 2005 by the European Geosciences Union.
