A MUST Read Before Investing in Mobile Homes

I have been investing in mobile/manufactured homes for 10 years. This book got me started. When folks as me how to get started - I tell them to read Lonnie's book!

I have had the privledge of meeting Lonnie while attending educational seminars where he was a featured speaker. Wonderful authentic person!

A good introduction to this field. I particularly liked the way he walked through the numbers. Have to be careful about the "note splitting" though. It's illegal in my state (WA). Otherwise a pretty good book.

Is this guy considered "Alpha" or just plain rude?

I thought the book description of billionaire Gaelan's coldness towards his six year old daughter and his inability to feel love for her must have been exaggerated. But then I read the book, and it is quite accurate. Not only that, but he keeps her virtually imprisoned in their house, home schooled and not allowed to have friends visit. The description did not mention his rudeness and arrogance, which he possesses in abundance.

He hires Chloe sight unseen to be his daughter's in-home tutor. Upon meeting her, he immediately fires her and declares, "I don't have to explain myself to you. I've met you, and I don't want you here. End of story." So what was Chloe's transgression? She's too young and too pretty; he had thought he was hiring a grandmotherly type. Shortly after, he hires her back, then practically attacks her with a kiss, and then SHE threatens to quit. She doesn't, of course, and the reason provided is that she feels such a strong bond with the child she had met mere hours before.

They spat and spar as they gradually learn to trust each other, and Chloe learns the reason for Gaelan's attitude towards his daughter. It is quite dramatic, as expected, but it's an absurd excuse for mistreatment of a young child. We know how the book will end, because we've seen it all: walls will come down, misunderstandings will be understood, obstacles will be obliterated, etc.

About 1/3 of the way through the book, Gaelan begins his transition to Completely Different Person and decides that he's in love with Chloe and that it might be a good idea to stop forcing his daughter to address him by his first name.

Soon after, Sophia and Chloe are in a car crash. Chloe is fine, but little Sophia is hospitalized with a concussion. When Gaelan learns of the crash, he seems more concerned over Chloe's welfare than his daughter's. I guess this is supposed to be romantic. Rather grossly, Gaelan's and Chloe's first romantic encounter occurs in the honeymoon suite of a hotel (yup, the only one available) while Sophia lies in the hospital. They express their deep concern over Sophia through sex and also consider partaking in the room's available champagne and hot tub. Never addressed is the fact they left Sophia in the hospital overnight alone! Also not addressed is the fact that Chloe was responsible for the accident by accepting a ride in a stranger's car and not properly restraining Sophia. I'm not even a parent, and that bothered me!

The book features a few Big Misunderstandings, quick forgiveness, a couple of Big Twists (that actually surprised me), and two minor villains. The author attempted to wrap everything up with a bow in a manner that would test even the most tolerant reader's credulity.

My review probably sounds like it should be no more than 2 stars. I'm trying to be fair with the 3, because the author's writing itself is not bad, and some people might actually enjoy this book. I happened to dislike the lead characters, and that feeling was intensified because I felt that the author glossed over or ignored some pretty horrible behavior and expected us to like the characters as soon as she waved her magic wand.

I just wish there were more books about men who are kind, self-confident, compassionate, and yes, SEXY, with amazing techniques in bed. Is a man like this really less appealing to readers than a man like Gaelan? Obviously, there's a big appeal for the Gaelan types, based on the amount of books I see.

I love to read stories like this so i decided to take a chance. I was severly disappointed. I felt the plot was really jumpy and that the story did not have a nice flow. I had to go back a re-read parts because i was confused as to things that had happened. I do not recommend this book to anyone. It was awful.

Cliched but the author shows promise

The Billionaire's Secrets has a wonderful premise with great mood and setting. I was pleasantly surprised to see it was set in Newfoundland, a rare place to set a romantic suspense. I also felt that the writing was clean and the very few mistakes I found weren't bothersome, with the exception that I always thought that the rum, Screech, was a brand name, yet it was never capitalized. But what really bothered me was although the novel had been revised in 2012, the same issues remained in the new copy. The hero gets mad at heroine, then kisses her, then she gets mad and forgives him. Then the cycle starts again in a different scene. The hero appeared to have a bipolar disorder.
The plot was cliched and unbelievable. In the opening scene, the heroine is nearly run over by the hero who then drives off after telling her that if she can walk to his home, with all her luggage, she has the job. The hero is difficult to like and the heroine, though strong, is too forgiving, mostly because the hero is handsome and the child she is to educate is too cute. I also felt that the scene in the hotel was staged as if the author was trying to install the requisite love scene. It was hard to believe that in the city there was only one hotel room available and it was the honeymoon suite, and that the hospital would not allow a parent to stay with an injured child. The characters did not endear themselves by wanting to make love and open a bottle of champagne to celebrate that the child was not injured too badly.
When the lovemaking is finally consummated several scenes later, a spare bedroom magically appears beside his home office and the pair can make love there. The plot twists at the end of the book were more than predictable and the unlikeable hero switched too suddenly. The author has talent, but should employ a brutal editor to point out plot problems in her future stories. She tried too hard to recreate a Jane Eyre styled book at the expense of believability. Jane Eyre is a book that reflected the times in which it was set. It does not translate well in today's world.
But there is enough quality writing in this book to warrant saying that if the author publishes another book, I might try her again.

About the Author
Fred S. Kleiner (Ph.D., Columbia University) is the author or co-author of the 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th, and 15th editions of GARDNER'S ART THROUGH THE AGES: A GLOBAL HISTORY, as well as the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd editions of GARDNER'S ART THROUGH THE AGES: A CONCISE HISTORY, and more than 100 publications on Greek and Roman art and architecture, including A HISTORY OF ROMAN ART, also published by Cengage. He has taught the art history survey course for more than three decades, first at the University of Virginia and, since 1978, at Boston University, where he is currently professor of art history and archaeology. From 1985 to 1998, he was editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Archaeology. Long acclaimed for his inspiring lectures and dedication to students, Professor Kleiner won Boston University's Metcalf Award for Excellence in Teaching, as well as the College Prize for Undergraduate Advising in the Humanities in 2002, and he is a two-time winner of the Distinguished Teaching Prize in the College of Arts and Sciences Honors Program. Gardner's Art Through the Ages: Non-Western Perspectives

I regularly assign this book for a Non-Western Humanities class. I have read most of the comparable texts out there, and this text is the best in terms of cultural background information and clear writing style. The choice of artwork is thoughtful and provides a good overview to each culture. My students generally give me excellent reviews of the textbook. Highly recommended for university instruction.

Extremely Useful

I used the beginning of this book for my Art of Asia class and found it very helpful. The diction is not complicated so one is able to quickly read through the passages and get the information down. For quizzes, going through the passage a second time really helped in understanding what I read. It was, however, a lot smaller than I anticipated for the price, so I recommend purchasing it used. There are lots of color pictures to balance out the small text, great for those who get bored and distracted easily while reading, such as myself. Overall, if needed for a class, I would definately buy it.

it's a shame that the publisher spoils a good book.

This refers to the kindle edition: the book is deceptively advertised for a low price, while the price is actually for rental. It is clear to me, but my wife and daughter didn't see this. More frustrating is that the book is full of gray squares that are images blocked for copyright reasons. This is an outrageous, unacceptable, unjustifiable practice. The publisher should secure the copyright or not publish something in the first place.
Not to mention that for anybody trying to get this book for a college or precollege student it is an extremely confusing collection of similar titles, various editions for different territories. We spent a couple of weeks emailing back and forth with the teacher trying to figure out which one is the exact edition that the teacher requested. We ended buying three versions and still not sure if it is exactly the same edition.
The price is overinflated cannot be justified by selling a 70 year old book talking about 1000 year old stuff.

Grade 10 Up --An authoritative, carefully expressed argument for aiming at a small liberal-arts college rather than a large, impersonal university. Pope claims that there is "a lot of non-Ivy quality available" for many kinds of students, and describes several colleges and programs to back up his points. This information, however, is limited. He describes ways in which learning-disabled students or low high-school achievers can obtain a college education, and includes sensible advice on the application/selection process and financial aid. Although some may justifiably argue that the picture of large universities isn't always quite as glum as he paints, Pope's recommendations and concerns are usually on target. His style is not upbeat like many guides of this type, such as Edward B. Fiske's How to Get into the Right College (Times, 1988), but it is practical and filled with wisdom and good examples. Students who are as interested in the social scene or extracurricular activities as they are in academics will not find the book as useful as those students primarily concerned with serious learning. --Diane P. If students use size, name, and prestige as the sole criteria for choosing a college, then they may be limiting their opportunities of finding a college that is right for them, says veteran college counselor Pope, director of the College Placement Bureau. Pope shares his "personal favorite" colleges and 200 other colleges worth considering because they provide a good experience and help students shape their futures. Chapter-length discussions deal with enhancing high school preparation, improving the attractiveness of the applicant and application, and more. Though similar to Richard Moll's The Public Ivys (Penguin, 1986) and Martin Nemko's How To Get an Ivy League Education at a State University (Avon, 1988), Pope's book covers a wider range of size and caliber than either of those, and therefore is more useful for students of varying academic goals and abilities. Well written, clear, and direct, this is enthusiastically recommended for high school, public, and community college libraries.

ADMISSION, MONEY AND SATISFACTION AT COLLEGE

The two books by Loren Pope changed the way we looked at college for our daughter and led to successful admission with generous financial aide with a school we would have overlooked. As caring parents who spent too many years connected to higher education, (mostly at large schools), these two books redirected the college search towards smaller, nurturing liberal arts colleges that also provide merit based financial aide; no longer did we consider college factories or schools with unjustified high reputations without commensurate attention to teaching. Of the 12(!)College guides we read, the two from Loren Pope were the best and directly changed our daughter's life for the better. These are a must read.

Profound concepts but outdated data

Mr. Pope has a contrarian philosophy of higher education based on his career long inside knowledge as a college counselor. In his view, Ivy leagues are way over rated. Their reputation is perpetrated by the college rankings of U.S. News. According to Mr. Pope, such rankings are almost irrelevant as they don't measure in any way the quality of education provided to the students by such schools. But, they reinforce the reputation of schools which drive up application numbers, which in turn allows these "top" schools to become increasingly selective, and further boosts their U.S. News ranking. For Mr. Pope this is a self reinforcing not so virtuous cycle.
Mr. Pope instead recommends to look at the multitude of excellent small liberal arts college located in the Midwest, South, and West that are not so well known. Because they are less well known, their respective acceptance rates are way higher than for their better known counterparts back East and the Ivy league. Yet, they often provide a just as good if not superior college education. Their professors are fully dedicated to teaching undergraduates. This is unlike in the Ivy league whose professors are more dedicated to research, publication, consulting, and PhD candidates.
The above concepts are really mind opening and powerful. Where Mr. Pope's book falls short, is that his data is more than 20 years out of date. This is difficult to overlook or forgive given that he "updated" his book in 1995, yet his data covers the period from 1951 to 1980. So, at the time of the book's second publication, this book's data was already 15 years out of date. One has to wonder why he did not bother to update the data. It would have made his book so much better.
With outdated data Mr. Pope inevitably makes many embarassing college recommendations. Many of the schools he is so crazy about, are now really poor educational performers that should have been screened out of any truly updated edition of this book. As an example, Antioch College in Ohio has a really poor freshman retention rate of 66%. This is the lowest freshman retention rate I have come across in my researching colleges. Similarly, in his other related book "Colleges that Change Lives" after doing some research, I screened out 20 of the 40 mentioned (or 50%) because of either low freshman retention rate, low graduation rate, and low percentage of graduates going on to graduate schools.

This book changed my life

Haven't written reviews here before, but seeing with delight that this book is still around I had to write one. I read this book midway through my junior year of high-school and, struck by the sensible and sound reasoning that informs every argument, I applied to a completely different set of schools than I initially considered. Ultimately I feel I profited invaluably from attending a small liberal-arts college instead of a big brand name: I was going through a lot of troubles, and the individual attention and support I was able to obtain from small departments, small classes, and concerned and caring professors (even outside of my major) allowed me to find my inner strengths and embark on a life path I would not have dreamed of when I first arrived at college. Now how many of my friends who went to big-name research universities can say that? Thanks, Mr. Pope.

How About A CD With XML Formatted Data?

Generations of engineers, and not a few chemists and physicists either, have depended on this book as the standard reference for the properties of water.
This is the 1969 edition, and there is no more recent edition. Which should give you some idea of how definitively the authors described their subject.
Perhaps the only suggestion for improvement is for a CD version that has the tables in some XML format that can be easily integrated into a computer program. Notice that this is different from other books which might have a CD version that duplicates the contents of the hardcopy. There, the CD's main advantage might be the ability to have a comprehensive all-word index. Here, where most of the book are tables of numbers, that need is not really relevant. Instead, where there are tables, the best use of CD would be to hold XML formatted tables.

After being captured by the Super Friends Dr. Insano failed to stay current on the Mt.Doom Laboratory/Hideout. As such my self and the other research assistants were locked out by the landlord. As we wait for the writ of reentry to work its way through the court system we are forced to make do without our mainframes, reel to reels and magnetic tapes full of experimental data. In light of our predicament this book is a good back-to-basics compilation of steam data, with enough resolution as to eliminate the need for interpolation in most cases. It doesn't matter if you are a Mad Scientist working on his(or her, MORE GIRLS IN S.T.E.M.S !) next doomsday device, a Mad Grad student working on his/her dissertation on mayhem this book is a God send.

Valuable tool for dispatching thermodynamic problems

I'm not a fan of crunching engineering problems. However, if one can simply the process, I'm all for it.

I've made this purchase on the advice of some colleague's experience and I've benefited the tip. In short, this will help save you from the arduous tasks of interpolating during test situation.

It's arguable that software can iterate and solve faster. Until you are actually running numbers for a company and able to justify a purchased program, I think this book is very handy.

About the Author
Krister Holmberg is Professor of Surface Chemistry and Director of Materials Science Area of Advance at Chalmers University of Technology in Göteborg (Sweden). He was awarded a PhD at Chalmers University and after gaining his doctorate, he worked as a researcher at a number of Swedish chemical companies. From 1991 to 1997 he was head of the Surface Chemistry Institute, Stockholm (Sweden). He was also adjunct professor at Göteborg University in Biotechnical Surface Chemistry and at the Royal Institute of Technology in Technical Surface and Colloid Chemistry. Professor Holmberg's current research interests include novel surfactants, organic and bioorganic reactions in organized media such as microemulsions and suspensions of mesoporous materials, and controlled delivery of active substances.

Professor Bengt Kronberg is a Senior Research Fellow and Course Director at SP Technical Research Institute of Sweden. He has a long experience in teaching fundamental and applied aspects of surface chemistry. He has published over 80 papers in the field and is a co-author of the book "Surfactants and Polymers in Aqueous Solution". Professor Kronberg supervises research in the fields of microemulsions, adsorption of surfactants and polymers, fuel formulations, and polymeric networks.

Professor Björn Lindman is senior scientist at the Department of Physical Chemistry, University of Lund, Sweden and Visiting Professor at School of Materials Science & Engineering at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He has published more than 600 papers, and co-authored three books and edited more than ten books in the field of surface and colloid chemistry. Furthermore he is a well-known lecturer and consultant worldwide. Professor Lindman's current research projects include: DNA gel particles and cross-linked DNA gels, Controlling the phase behavior of polyion-surfactant ion complex salts by cyclodextrins and associative effects of polyacrylates in surfactant systems.
