Excellent book on psych. testing

As a therapist who supervises social workers at a center for emotionally disturbed children, I have to read and understand psychological tests. This book is lucid, well-written, covers a lot of ground regarding most of the tests. It has been a great help.

An excellent clinician's handbook on psychological testing

This is book is great because it provides really clear information on all of the best psych tests, including the WAIS-III and WMS-III. I also like that it includes test results for children and older adults, not just adults. It's short and sweet, and small enough to take with me when I see patients.

Great resource- a little dated

A great resource for a quick and dirty compile of information useful for cross battery analysis. One difficulty of it is the dated testing - particularly with iq assessments (eg, WAIS 3). Despite this, As a resource for integrating projective and explicit personality tests this is fantastic. It provides clear examples and literature supporting specific diagnostic responses. Cheap. Must have.

Momentum Trading Systems

Having read "Adaptive Analysis" by Nick Radge a couple of years ago I was eager to purchase his latest book "Unholy Grails" and I am very happy that I did. The main focus of this book is about how to outperform buy and hold with the use of a robust fully tested trend following strategy that has a positive expectancy. Each system is clearly explained so that the reader has a full understanding of how it works and why it works. Each strategy has been robustly tested to ensure that they will operate in varying market conditions. The full test results for each system are clearly laid out in the book. These results include the CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate), Maximum Drawdown, MAR, Exposure, Number of transactions, Win %, Win/ Loss Ratio, Standard Deviation, and the Sharpe Ratio. Some of the other topics covered in this book include the use of price, volume and turnover filters, selecting a test universe, optimisation and also the psychological side to trading.

Near the end of the book Nick interviews several successful traders about the trading systems that they manage. The interviews are quite in depth and give the reader a good understanding of what it's like as a trader.

In summary this is easily the best trading book that I have read. Instead of just rehashing old ideas and offering very little like the majority of trading books that I have read, this book really delivers. It actually helps when it's written by a trader.

Trend Following Systems Explained

Most new traders generally go looking for the holy grail of trading. That system that just prints money, they believe it exists and will look relentlessly for it. However there is no holy grail of trading. The closest thing a trader can get to a holy grail in trading is a robust mechanical trend following system with limited draw downs that the trader can deal with without emotions causing them to over ride the system.

Nick Radge as written a great book on this very topic `Unholy Grails', this is a great addition to any trend following trader's library regardless of your specific method for trend following. What Nick does is take the reader through how he builds mechanical trend following systems that beat the market. His momentum based strategies are based primarily on catching a market wave and riding it for over sized profits. Not through predictions but through back tested mechanical systematic strategies based on momentum that have historically been shown to beat the market during a trend and over the long term. In between these trends the system is designed to limit equity draw downs by automatically stopping out of losing trades when certain parameters are hit. His key message in the book is to create a system based both on simplicity and robustness. His systems allocate the investors account into 20 equal increments to manage risk without diluting returns.

He measures his systems through the metrics of return, risk, and also reliability. Nick does a great job of giving the reader charts demonstrating the historical equity curves of both profits in dollars and percentage of equity draw downs during markets that are not conducive to profits. Nick has placed charts in the book showing the returns of each system year by year based on historical information using the systems entry and exit metrics for its watch list.

Nick has some excellent interviews with very successful traders in the back of the book and how they successfully manage their trading systems in real accounts with real money. He also covers the misconceptions about trend following traders and explains the truth about what they do.

This is just an excellent addition to trend following literature and is a perfect complement to Michael Covel's writings. I highly recommend.

The reality of mechanical trading

The reality of this book is somewhat shocking. I cant remember having ever read a book which explains various trading systems in detail and includes the statistical harsh downside and the always sort after upside. I will not detail the book section by section as previous reviewers have done this quite nicely. But there is no doubt the "real life" context in which Radge has explained mechanical trading is to be commended. After reading this book you are not left feeling high nor low - but rather grounded on the topic with a intimate understanding that with hard work profits are to be found.

Admittedly you will need a good test platform and will need to be reasonably fluent in high level programming language to put these types of systems into action but i believe anyone who is interested in mechanical trading systems would already have a good understanding of the tool kit required to backtest/code etc.

The tool kit aside, the angle from which Radge approaches this topic is well thought out - not overwhelming the reader and this ensures you make it through the entire book.

Simplicity truly is the ultimate sophistication.

Henry Louis Gates, Jr. (Ph.D.Cambridge), is Alphonse Fletcher University Professor and Director of the W. E. B. Du Bois Institute for African and American Research, Harvard University. He is the author of Life Upon These Shores: Looking at African American History, 1513–2008; Black in Latin America; Tradition and the Black Atlantic: Critical Theory in the African Diaspora; Faces of America; Figures in Black: Words, Signs, and the Racial Self; The Signifying Monkey: A Theory of Afro-American Criticism; Loose Canons: Notes on the Culture Wars; Colored People: A Memoir; The Future of Race with Cornel West; Wonders of the African World; Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Black Man; and The Trials of Phillis Wheatley. Her essays, fiction, and plays have appeared in publications from the Buffalo News to the Southeast Review. She has been a DuBois Fellow, a Mellon Fellow, and a Henry Luce Scholar.

Great Collection, but...

This collection is one of the best collections of African American discourse that have probably ever been collected, but I have one complaint. It does not include enough aspects of the debate within the African community on Africa, especially during Part V, the section on the Civil Rights Movement. In Part III, on the Great Migration and Black Renaissance, it mentions Garvey's Back to Africa movement and the emergence of the Pan-African movement with WEB Du Bois' conferences. In Part IV, it also doesn't mention the incredible response, both for and agianst, of the African American community to the 1935 Italian invasion of Ethiopia, which at that time was the last remaining independent African nation. If anything, African American interest in Africa increased during the civil rights movement as African nations gained their independence from colonialism during the 1950s and 1960s. In 1957, Ghana achieved its independence and Kwame Nkrumah invited African Americans to emigrate to his new nation and many took him up on his offer. African Americans reacted to the assassination of Patrice Lumumba in the Congo in 1961. Here is one of the famous lines from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s, 1963 "Letter from Birmingham Jail," "The nations of Asia and Africa are moving with jetlike speed toward gaining political independence, but we still creep at horse-and-buggy pace toward gaining a cup of coffee at a lunch counter." While the letter is included, it is not placed within the context of King's anti-colonialism and transnational connections to Africa. King was also very active in the anti-apartheid movement. As other debates were spread out over more than one period, anti apartheid activism of the African American community could also be shown to exist from supporting the Defiance Campaign against Unjust Laws in 1952 to supporting economic sanctions against South Africa in the 1980s. Like other debates, these issues were not all one-sided, there were African Americans that argued that the struggle in the United States was more important than a struggle for independence half-a-world-away, for a group whom they did not consider their brethren.

While several good books; e.g., Proudly We Can Be Africans: Black Americans and Africa, 1935-1961, accomplish this objective in the secondary literature this was the chance to publish primary sources to reflect this debate within the black community.

Had more of these transnational connections been demonstrated in this collection it would be worth a five-star rating.

The fourth in a series of Nick Stone thrillers (after the well-received Firewall), this one gets off to an exciting if typical start as freelance assassin and ex-British SAS agent Stone orchestrates a precision team hit on a high-level target attending a snobby dessert social on the banks of the Thames. The target is to be identified by the team leader, Yes Man, who is to tap the victim on the left shoulder and wait for the snipers to do the dirty work. At the moment of contact, without explanation, Yes Man compromises the mission, and the police end up killing the three snipers. Stone is inexplicably given a second chance to complete his assignment alone by "last light Friday" at the victim's fortified home near the Panama Canal Zone. At this point (if not earlier), the novel loses coherence, dwelling on Stone's encounters with an aging tree-hugger college professor, his ganja-smoking young wife and their adopted daughter, who provide him with weapons and a base of operations in the Panamanian rain forest. Among Stone's spine-tingling preoccupations in Panama are chigger bites, a nagging headache and his nonstop guzzling of water, and there is a plethora of dialogue-driven exposition about Noriega's overthrow and the ruin of the rain forests. More choir boy than cold-blooded killer, Stone is given to mawkish introspection and invites self-destruction by confessing all sorts of sins to his colleagues. Most readers will be praying for an early sunset.

Nick Stone series book 4

This is the 4th book in the series and it is pretty similar to the other books. The author develops the story well and has many high and low points which keep you guessing a bit. I enjoyed book 3 Firewall more than this one but the Nick Stone books are always easy fun reads.

Good, not great.

So far I have had difficulty putting McNab's books down. Last Light was different - the book did meander a little on more than one occassion and admittedly I read about a third of the book and I wasn't really motivated to come back to it for several weeks.
I did enjoy it while I read it, but there was in general something missing from Last Light that was present in McNab's previous books. The story is good, but not great. Several chapters are a little on the dull side (maybe 'dull' is the wrong word and 'less gripping' is better) and at the end of the book I felt that not enough had really happened from cover to cover.
Personally, I found the climax a little disappointing and less intense than McNab's previous writings. The ending chapter seemed somewhat disconnected from the story itself and more of a re-introduction to the usual beat of the series, but even this failed to capture some of the more touching moments we've previously witnessed with Nick Stone's softer side.
If you're a McNab fan like me, then get this book. You won't be disappointed and you'll remain up to date with the life of Nick Stone. However, this book feels to me to be more of a 'standalone' than part of the Nick Stone series and you'll feel that this isn't quite going to fill the gap as you await the next update.
If you don't know of McNab, I can well recommend earlier Nick Stone books first as I feel that any interest you may potentially have in following this character may not be sparked up by Last Light. I can well recommend Firewall (best novel I ever read) for ultimate excitement, but there is benefit to starting at the beginning of the series too.

Firewall Redux

For such a talented writer, McNab can be a rather pedantic storyteller.
His two non-fiction books, "Bravo Two Zero" and "Immediate Action," are real page turners; reads that will have you laughing one minute and teary eyed the next. His fiction has ranged from pretty good ("Crisis Four") to pretty bad ("Firewall"). This book, unfortunately, falls in the latter category.
Without giving anything anyway (which actually wouldn't be hard with a plot this thin and predictable) "Last Light" is basically the exact same mix of characters and events as found in "Firewall" but set in the jungles of Panama rather than the snow of Finland. The same smart, seductive, all knowing woman who hides more than she lets on; the same innocent victim caught up in events; the same poor sidekick who ends up dead...
McNab's attention to detail and writing style are the only thing that save this book from being totally forgettable. The bits of tradecraft you learn are always interesting and his active voice carries you through the read quickly. Still, it is frustrating to force yourself through this kind of book when he has written such great material previously. He seems to be in a rut of following the same bland thriller formulas that so many other good authors come to rely on. I know he has it in him to churn out another pageburner - just hope it happens soon.

Padded but useful

I'm torn regarding how to review this book. One the one hand, there is so much fluff inside: long table of contents, passages telling us what the author is about to tell us, passages telling us what he just told us, lists reminding us of what he just told us a few pages ago. The book could have been 1/4 as long as it is and maintained its message. As it was, I kept thinking, "When are you actually going to say something useful??" Most of the book was quite frustrating to read, and I felt a bit insulted that so many words were used to tell me so little.

However - and this is a big "however" - when the author finally does lay out tips for effective lucid dreaming, they are succinct, innovative, and useful. While he does not promise results right away, I can truthfully say that I had a lucid dream the night after I read this book, after not having had more than the occasional random lucid dream for several years. That's too close for coincidence. Something I read in this book had a remarkable effect.

In sum, this book could have been a pamphlet - but a worthwhile pamphlet, and well worth the price you'll pay for it.

I really enjoyed this book

I really enjoyed this book, it is well written, insightful and accessible. I recently got into lucid dreaming and have been a sponge for all books on the topic; this one is a new favorite! My lucid dreaming has gone to a whole new level since reading this book, I highly recommend this to those of you out there looking for quality advice. I am excited to follow this practitioner's work, he is dedicated to the art of lucid dreaming and sharing his wisdom.

Its changing my life!

This book is already changing my life! Only after a few days of putting Sean's advice into practice, I am seeing the results of what being more conscious in my dreams can do. I feel more in control and empowered in my daily life and it's so liberating.

One of my concerns with lucid dreaming is that I wouldn't have the time, but the techniques are simple and I find myself wanting to practice.

Sean is very authentic and I like the style of the writing. Something unique I found was that I actually understand the process of learning to lucid dream now. It's a step-by-step process that for some reason I never really understood before. Either no one explained it well, or I just didn't get it. But now it's pretty simple.

This book has been huge help in motivating me to lucid dream. I simply know where I am at in the process, all the time.
