Autocad 2014 For dummies

Very helpful book, well indexed which makes looking up a topic easy. Coverage of AutoCAD seems to be very comprehensive and it certainly helped me get started more quickly. Prefer using it as my first place to goto rather than the AutoCAD on-line help. Recommend this book to anyone starting out in AutoCAD.

BE A MASTER OF YOUR AUTOCAD DOMAIN!!

Has your career path put you in a position where you need to know how to use AutoCAD? If it has, then this book is for you. Authors Bill Fane and David Byrnes, have done an outstanding job of writing a book that truly gets you going quickly with AutoCAD.
Authors Fane and Byrnes, begin by helping you ease into how to use AutoCAD to create engineering drawings and how to get started. In addition, they help you discover the half-dozen commands that account for much of your AutoCAD activities. The authors also expose you to the big picture, from start to finish; and, how to start a drawing to printing it. Then, they continue by correctly showing you how to set up AutoCAD and create templates to have drawing success. The authors then help you navigate through your drawing, by panning and zooming. Next, they help you draw linear things with the AutoCAD drawing commands; line up for lines and polylines; and, close up with rectangles and ploygons. In addition, the authors describe how you can round the curves with circles, arcs, splines, and clouds; employ eccentric ellipses; dunk for donuts; and make your points. In addition, they show you how to type coordinates at the keyboard; get to know the AutoCAD coordinate systems; snap to object features; and, use other precision drawing and editing techniques. The authors also introduce you to object properties: One set of AutoCAD tools and techniques that can help prevent you from making CAD messes. Then, they continue by showing you how to use command-first editing; select objects with maximum flexibility; and, edit with grips. The authors then introduce you to the primary edit commands in AutoCAD. Next, they explain how to set up layouts in paper space for efficient plotting. In addition, the authors show you how to add general drawing text and leaders to your drawings. They also take a close look at annotative dimensions. Then, the authors continue by showing you how to fill in closed areas of drawings with special patterns of lines or solid fills. They then show you how to configure printers and plotters; plot- model space, to scale, paper space layouts, with lineweights and colors; control plotters with plot styles; and, troubleshoot plots. Next, the authors present the ABCs of blocks, including basic creation and insertion; adding attributes; and, getting rid of block definitions you no longer need or want. In addition, they show you how to make even more of already created drawing data, including dynamic blocks, associative array objects, and several flavors of external reference files and raster images. The authors also introduce you to parametric drawing; how to understand constraints; how to apply geometrics and dimensional constraints; and, how to edit parametric drawings. Then, they continue by showing you how and when to use AutoCAD Internet features. Next, the authors take a look at some of the tools available in AutoCAD's 3D Modeling workspace and introduce you to many of the general concepts of creating 3D objects. In addition, they introduce you to the concepts, tools, and techniques of AutoCAD 3D modeling itself. Finally, the authors also show you how to generate 2D drawings from 3D models, and then move on to discuss rendering.
This excellent book helps you understand the importance of developing proper CAD techniques from the beginning. However, you do not need to have an idea of how to use your computer system before tackling AutoCAD and this great book.

Good Starter for Sophisticated Software

This is a very good starter book that makes learning some of the features of a very sophisticated software package pretty easy. I would still recommend getting "Mastering AutoCAD 2014 and AutoCAD LT 2014" to really go more in depth if that is what you wish to do. I cannot think of anyone that has spent $1,000 or much more that would not wish to go into more depth, but to each his/her own.
