Maurice Hall conoce a Clive Durham en una Cambridge totalmente masculina y misógina a principios del siglo XX, lo que comenzó entre ellos siendo una amistad sincera, llena de camaradería y complicidad fraternal derivó en un amor profundo, ingenuo y sincero que duró hasta que Clive que era un acérrimo detractor de todo convencionalismo victoriano de la época decide "curarse", romper con el pasado y convertirse en un hombre "honorable" respetuoso del tradicionalismo señorial familiar dejando a Maurice solo, triste, perdido y confundido con la ruptura. Tras un tiempo de vacio y soledad, Maurice conoce a Alec Scudder, un sirviente de la mansión de los Durham y con el nace una esperanza, esta vez todo será diferente, Maurice decide arriesgarse y romper con todo para ser feliz.
Novela adelantada a su época, escrita entre 1913-1914, en plena época Eduardina el autor aborda el tema de una relación homosexual entre hombres de distintas clases sociales en medio de una sociedad rígidamente estratificada donde el sexo era tema tabú y el amor entre personas del mismo sexo era un delito de "degenerados sodomitas" penado por la ley. Con una buena narrativa y unos excelentes diálogos entramos en la vida y destino de estos hombres que tuvieron que vivir en medio de una sociedad llena de hipocresía y doble moral como proscritos disfrazados para no ser condenados al ostracismo social mas absoluto.
