but still a useful guide. At a minimum it is interesting reading

Obviously dated, but still a useful guide. At a minimum it is interesting reading. I visited the South Island in February 2015 during the recent, severe drought that has left many rivers at disappointing low flows. Because I waited too long to hire a guide (book early!), I found the best source of current information for drive-to fishing to be the relatively few but helpful fishing shops, such as Hamills in Wanaka.

A must for fly fishing in New Zealand's South Island

Very good book on where to fish on the South Island of New Zealand. Even in this older edition, the rivers are still there and the descriptions still valid. I bought this after visiting NZ in 2012, and I am sorry I did not have it when I was there. A must for the fly fisher who wants to get out on their own.
