Necessary purchase for the PE Structural Exam

You need to buy this book if only to get an idea of the scope and length of the exam problems on the PE test. It is not the best study source material, but it is a fairly good practice exam. I found the short sample questions to be a little more in depth than the actual test and the sample essay questions to be not nearly as long or in depth as the exam.
Having passed the original style exam several years ago and going back this time for the new format (to make licensing reciprocity easier in a few key states) I had a pretty good idea how I wanted to study. I used the Structural Engineering Reference Manual by Alan Williams as my study bible. (Buy it, you need it, and it will help you pass). Once i had studied all of my materials for an exam day (vertical or lateral) I put myself in a timed scenario with all of my references at hand to work through the sample questions in this book as if it were a test. After completion of my practice 'test' I knew, what areas i needed more work in and had a good idea how to pace myself for the morning part of the exam. As I said above i was blown away by how much more work was required in the afternoon than the samples in this book, so be warned.

This IS NOT a study guide. This is an example of how someone tried to solve the problems. A study guide has to be clear and well explained so that the reader understands the content. It doesn't do reference to appropriate equations and/or code articles/sections. However, examinees HAVE to do so. Thus, this IS NOT the solving approach that you want to follow.

Must Have for SE Exam

This is great book to have if you are preparing to take the 16-hour SE exam. The questions are written by the same people that write the exam, so the style and difficulty of the questions is right on. Some of the solutions are not the clearest (not much in the way of explanation) and many of the questions are repeats from the old PE Structural I Sample Questions published by NCEES. But I think if you can do the questions in this book and the ones in "16-Hour Structural Engineering (SE) Practice Exam," you should be in good shape for the exam.
