Viruses and Human Disease, by Ellen G. Strauss, James H. Strauss

This is the first text to examine the connection between virology and human disease. It is also the first book to integrate basic virology with pathophysiological conditions. By contrast, most virology textbooks focus on the molecular biology involved without adequate reference to physiology. Viruses and Human Disease is four-color throughout and contains clearly labeled figures and tables.

From the Back Cover
This groundbreaking text examines the connection between virology and human disease by integrating basic virology with pathophysiological conditions. The book focuses on viruses that infect humans, domestic animals, and other vertebrates. In addition to describing the molecular structure and replication of these viruses, emphasis is placed on how viruses cause human diseases, from polio to HIV. The presentation of this information is greatly enhanced by four-color illustrations and clearly labeled figures and tables. This text provides an excellent overview for students, as well as researchers and clinicians interested in viruses as agents of human disease.

gadzooks!
By Thomas De Voe Worthen
This book is astoundingly complete and detailed, with many electronmicrographs, illustrations, graphs, and tables. It would serve admirably as textbook on virology with the added benefit of its fascinating tie-ins with viral caused human disease, including mechanisms of infection and epidemiology. Bravo!

The bad news is that its readers must be prepared by having studied biochemistry before ever cracking it open. This is no fault of the book; just a fact.

An alternative both to the book and for preparation to read it, is to follow every link in the Wikipedia articles on virus, virology, etc.

Viruses and Human Disease
By Stefan Grabas
The wealth of information in this book on viruses and its interaction on their host is provided in an easy to understand manner. I belive that this knowledge will help me in my quest to find a cure for disease I am currently researching....My kudos to Mrs and Mr Strauss for their efforts to educate us and expand our knowledge of this non-discriminating phenomena of our existential mystery...

Excellent book, but...
By JoeT
As a virologist, I like to read books on viruses.
This is a really good book overall, but 2-caveats:
1. You better know something about viruses before you read it. It's not a beginners text.
2. While the title is Viruses and Human Disease, the real topic here is Viruses; the human disease part is not as well defined as you might expect.

Still, quite a good book.
