About the Author
Robert E. Quinn is the Margaret Elliott Tracy Collegiate Professor in Business Administration & Professor of Management and Organizations at the University of Michigan. He has published many papers and books on management and organization, but Professor Quinn is particularly interested in issues concerning leadership, vision and change. He has an applied orientation and has 25 years of experience in working with executives on issues of organizational change. He has been involved in the design and execution of numerous large-scale change projects. He has worked with a large percentage of the Fortune 500 companies. He teaches in both the MBA and Executive Education Programs at the University of Michigan and is known for innovative instructional efforts. Professor Quinn is also a fellow of the World Business Academy.

Very corporate

I have to give kudos to the authors for being able to lay out any corporate concept in a straight-forward, easy to understand manner. The book also makes a point of including several 'exercises' which allow the reader to figure out how each concept could be applied in an actual real-life scenario. A lot of books tend to lack the practical application of their theories, which doesn't exactly lend credence; so, it was nice to see that the authors took the effort to show their theories in action. This is especially helpful because I have known several managers who learn of a managerial practice, but then put it into effect in a manner that is unproductive, if not outright hostile.

On that note, most of the material covered here struck me as information that I already knew, but laid out so as to show what a manager should be doing (listen to others, state a goal etc. etc.) Unfortunately, again, I have known managers who didn't meet most of the criteria for the 'managerial roles' laid out in this book and would actually benefit from reading these standards.

If it weren't for the absurdly high price tag (a sign that this is a college textbook), I actually would recommend any suffering employee to buy the book and discretely slip it in the in-bin of his/her business's horrible manager.

This book is not the best book on competing values, but it serves its purpose. I would look elsewhere for a competing values approach book before settling on this one.
